That’s the whisper making the rounds after a recent leak from tipster Smart Pikachu: Vivo’s next foldable, the X Fold 6, is reportedly being tested with a 200-megapixel camera and a multispectral sensor. If true, we’re not just talking higher resolution—this could change how foldables handle color and detail under real-world conditions.
Don’t read this in isolation. Honor and Oppo are expected to stir the pot first, with the Magic V6 and Find N6 tipped to debut in China around March. Xiaomi sat this round out after skipping the Mix Fold 5, which leaves Vivo a clear runway to chase imaging bragging rights.
Last year’s X Fold 5 leaned on a Sony IMX921 primary shooter with OIS, supported by a 50MP ultra-wide and a 50MP periscope telephoto. It was a solid setup, but no multispectral sensor. The potential addition of multispectral hardware to the Fold 6 would be a notable shift—this sensor type helps the camera see color beyond what the eye perceives, improving color accuracy and scene tuning.
Questions remain. Will the 200MP module be supplied by Samsung or OmniVision? Will it act as the main sensor or be paired with the periscope for extreme, high-resolution zooming? Each choice has trade-offs. As a main camera, a 200MP sensor could enable aggressive pixel-binning for cleaner low-light images. Sources point to a possible July reveal, mirroring Vivo’s previous cadence, though market timing could shift with competitors launching earlier in the year.
Foldable phones have long been a balancing act between engineering ambition and camera expectations.
