Imagine the Dynamic Island reduced to a whisper of a notch — smaller, neater, almost invisible. That’s the first image Jeff Pu, an analyst at GF Securities, paints in his latest note about Apple’s next Pro phones. He says the flood illuminator used for Face ID will be tucked beneath the display, letting the cutout shrink and the screen breathe a little more.
It isn’t just cosmetics. A smaller island changes the visual hierarchy of the lock screen and notifications. It’s a minor tweak on paper, but those tiny interface shifts add up. Users won’t just see a smaller hole; they’ll get a subtly different interaction with alerts, playback controls, and Live Activities.
Photography gets attention, too. Pu expects the 48MP main sensor to gain a variable aperture, which sounds like a deliberate nudge toward better low-light shots and more control over depth and bokeh. Variable aperture on a phone sensor is not revolutionary, but it matters. It lets the camera pick its own lens opening depending on the scene, prioritizing sharpness in daylight and light capture when the sun dips.
Under the hood, Apple’s hardware story is turning into a three-act play. First: the A20 Pro. Built on TSMC’s first-gen 2nm node and wrapped in a new packaging design, the chip promises generational efficiency and performance gains. Shorter transit, less heat. Longer battery life. Faster everything.
Second: the N2 wireless chip, which will succeed the N1 that powered Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread in the iPhone 17 family and the iPhone Air. Pu doesn’t list specifics, so expect incremental improvements — lower power draw, crisper signal handoffs, and perhaps better latency for mesh devices and audio streaming.
Third: the much-talked-about C2 modem may finally join the Pro party. Until now, Apple’s in-house modems were confined to special editions — the C1 showed up in the iPhone 16e and the C1X in the iPhone Air. Bringing C2 to the mainstream Pro models would mark a key shift: Apple’s modem engineering moving from experimental to core product strategy.
Why does that matter? Because integrating its own modem stack gives Apple more control over power tuning, antenna strategies, and how radios interact with the CPU and baseband firmware. That could translate to steadier connections in crowded places and battery savings that you notice day to day.
Timing-wise, Pu expects Apple to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September, likely alongside the rumored iPhone Fold. The standard iPhone 18 and a more affordable iPhone 18e could follow next spring, staggered releases that let Apple focus the spotlight where it wants it.
None of this is final, of course. Analysts listen to supply chains, so their notes are valuable signposts rather than blueprints. Still, taken together these tweaks — a smaller Dynamic Island, a more versatile 48MP camera, the A20 Pro on 2nm, the N2 wireless upgrade, and a mainstream C2 modem — suggest Apple is refining the Pro experience across display, imaging, silicon, and connectivity. And that’s the pattern worth watching.
