Microsoft is quietly drawing a line under one of its older event tools, and the replacement is arriving with far more headroom. Starting tomorrow, Viva Engage will no longer let organizations schedule live events powered by Teams Live Events. In its place, Microsoft is pushing customers toward Teams Town Hall, a move that comes with a much bigger stage for large-scale digital gatherings.
The change matters most for companies that still rely on Engage for internal town halls, executive briefings, product updates, and hybrid meetings. Microsoft says any events already scheduled before the cutoff will continue to be supported until February 28, 2027, but new planning has to shift to the Town Hall model. In other words, the old path is closing fast.
A bigger room, finally
Viva Engage, which many longtime Microsoft 365 users will remember as Yammer, sits inside Microsoft’s enterprise collaboration stack and has long been positioned as a workplace community platform. The latest update turns it into something more event-friendly. With Teams Town Hall, Microsoft is promising a smoother experience for large audiences, especially for organizations that need to mix live presentation with broader participation.
On the standard plan, Town Hall supports the same attendee limits as Teams Live Events, but it also opens the door to 3,000 interactive participants. That detail matters. It means these events are no longer just one-way broadcasts. They can feel more alive, more conversational, and far better suited to modern enterprise communication.
And then there is the real headline: capacity. Customers that need even more scale can add the Attendee Capacity Pack, which expands support to as many as 100,000 attendees in a single session. For global companies, large product launches, all-hands meetings, and company-wide announcements, that is a serious upgrade.
Microsoft is also making the transition an administrative housekeeping exercise. Organizations are being told to migrate any Engage-based live events to Teams Town Hall and review internal documentation that still refers to the older setup. That includes scheduling workflows, training guides, and any support pages employees may still depend on.
The message is clear. The legacy Teams Live Events experience is being phased out, and Microsoft wants Viva Engage users to move with it. For admins, there is work to do now. For everyone else, the payoff is a more modern event platform with far more breathing room.
