Gemini’s Smartest Feature Goes Global, With Caveats

3 Minutes

Google’s most personal version of Gemini is stepping out of the US and into the wider world. The feature, called Personal Intelligence, makes the chatbot feel less like a generic AI tool and more like a digital assistant that actually knows you. It can tap into parts of your Google life, including Gmail, Photos, search history, and even YouTube activity, to shape more relevant replies.

That broader rollout is finally underway, but not everyone gets in at once. Google says Personal Intelligence is now available in most major countries, though users in the UK, Nigeria, Korea, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area are currently left out.

For the moment, the first wave is reserved for subscribers on Google’s paid AI tiers: Plus, Pro, and Ultra. Free users are next in line, with Google saying access should reach them in the coming weeks.

Turning it on is straightforward. On the web, Gemini should display a prompt card inviting users to enable Personal Intelligence. From there, you can connect supported Google services and start receiving responses that are tailored with more context. The same option is also tucked inside Gemini’s settings under Connect apps, where each service can be linked individually.

Privacy remains front and center. The feature is off by default, and Google says it will not use Gmail, Google Photos, or other personal data to train Gemini. That reassurance matters, especially as AI assistants become more tightly woven into everyday digital habits.

Because the rollout is happening in stages, the option may not appear immediately for every eligible user. Patience may be required. A little.

Memory you can switch off in seconds

Google has also built in a simple escape hatch for people who want a more limited interaction. Inside any Gemini chat, tapping the Tools icon lets you turn off Personal Intelligence for that specific conversation. It is a temporary change, though. The next time you start a new chat, Gemini will go back to using the linked Google services unless you switch it off again.

You can also ask Gemini to regenerate a reply without pulling in context from your Google account. That gives users a bit more control when they want a cleaner, more general answer.

Still, Google is being realistic about the limits of the system. Even with safeguards in place, Personal Intelligence can make mistakes or connect unrelated pieces of information in ways that do not quite make sense. When that happens, Google wants users to flag the response with a thumbs-down and leave feedback.

That is the trade-off, really. Gemini is becoming more useful, more personal, and a little more aware of the digital trail you leave behind. But the closer an AI gets to your everyday life, the more carefully it has to earn your trust.

“I love exploring gadgets, apps, and trends that redefine how we connect, work, and play in a digital world.”

This sounds sus... How safe is 'not used to train' really? Also why skip EEA and UK, feels off. Waiting to see the fine print.
