Xiaomi may be about to put artificial intelligence exactly where users can feel it: right under their thumb.
Early renders shared on X suggest the upcoming Xiaomi 18 Pro could feature a dedicated physical AI button on its side, a move that sets it apart from the usual software-first approach seen on most modern smartphones. Instead of burying AI tools inside menus or hiding them behind a long press, Xiaomi seems ready to make them instantly accessible.
The images were posted by Leo Hefeng, who identifies himself as a Xiaomi employee in his X bio. In the renders, the phone appears with a curved middle frame and a side-mounted button positioned neatly in the center. According to Hefeng, the key will be customizable, opening the door to quick access for AI features, smart home controls, and even functions tied to compatible Xiaomi electric vehicles.
That last part is especially interesting. If Xiaomi follows through, the button could become more than a novelty. It could be a real shortcut into the company’s wider ecosystem, from connected appliances to mobility services. Of course, leaks are leaks. Plans change, features vanish, and polished concepts do not always make it to store shelves.
A rear display that refuses to disappear
The AI button is only one piece of the puzzle. The Xiaomi 18 Pro is also rumored to keep the secondary rear display that helped define the 17 Pro line and, judging by sales, gave Xiaomi a reason to stick with it. This time, the company is said to be refining the feature into what it calls an AI-powered smart window.
That upgraded rear screen is expected to build on what the Xiaomi 17 Pro already offered, with improved live translation, smarter notification handling, and better selfie framing. In other words, Xiaomi appears to be turning a once flashy design trick into something more practical.
On the hardware side, the rumors are just as bold. Reports point to a 6.3-inch 2K LTPO OLED display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chip, and a dual 200-megapixel camera setup covering the main and telephoto lenses. Battery capacity is also said to top 7,000mAh, which would place the phone firmly in all-day, maybe-all-weekend territory for heavy users.
For now, the timeline points to a September 2026 launch in China, which would line up with Xiaomi’s recent release rhythm. But this is still early days. The renders come from a single source, and with months left before any official announcement, the final Xiaomi 18 Pro could look very different.
Still, the direction is clear. Xiaomi wants AI to feel less like a feature buried in software and more like something you can touch, tap, and use without thinking twice. If these leaks hold up, the Xiaomi 18 Pro may end up being one of the company’s most talked-about flagships yet.
