Google’s long-rumored answer to WHOOP may be closer than ever to stepping into the spotlight. The screenless fitness band that has been quietly making the rounds could soon arrive with a name that leaves little doubt about who’s in charge: Google.
By now, many sports fans have already spotted NBA star Stephen Curry wearing what appears to be Google’s upcoming wearable. The device is expected to take aim at WHOOP’s athlete-first formula, with a minimalist design and a clear focus on fitness tracking rather than flashy hardware. Now, new reporting suggests the mystery product may finally have an identity.
A Fitbit name with a Google stamp
According to 9to5Google, the band may launch as the Google Fitbit Air, a label that seems built to signal something slim, light, and stripped back. The name also hints at Google’s growing preference for putting its own branding at the center, even as Fitbit remains part of the story.
The same report says Google is preparing a broader reshuffle on the software side too. Fitbit Premium could be reintroduced as Google Health, with the new subscription service arriving alongside the Fitbit Air band. Fitbit’s personal health coach, currently available in public preview, may also be renamed Google Health Coach when the wearable debuts.
If that branding shift holds, it would mark another clear sign that Google is tightening its grip on Fitbit and folding the company more deeply into its own product family. The Fitbit name is not disappearing, but it may no longer be the headline.
As for launch timing, Google has stayed quiet. Still, with Google I/O just weeks away, the stage is set for a reveal. And if the company is planning to take on WHOOP directly, this could be the moment it finally makes the move public.
