OnePlus is doing something a little unexpected with its next phone. The upcoming Ace 6 Ultra is not just being sold as a gaming smartphone. With the right snap-on controller, it becomes something much closer to a proper Android gaming handheld.
That detail was confirmed ahead of the April 28 launch, along with fresh images showing how the phone fits into the new attachable gamepad. Instead of leaning on touch controls alone, the Ace 6 Ultra docks directly into the controller, giving it a console-style shape that should feel far more natural in the hands.
The company is clearly aiming for a more serious gaming setup here. The grip is designed to mimic the feel of a traditional handheld, while customizable button mapping and four physical buttons open the door to more precise inputs than the usual two-thumb mobile routine. For players who want tighter control, that could make a real difference.
Speed is part of the pitch too. OnePlus says the controller uses micro-mechanical switches with a 1000Hz polling rate and a 1.8ms response time. In plain terms, it is built to react fast. Very fast.
The accessory bundle appears to go beyond basic controls. OnePlus has also shown a detachable magnetic cooling fan meant to help with heat during longer sessions, plus a gaming antenna for stronger signal reception. A bottom-mounted USB-C port means charging should not get in the way while you play. Handy. And necessary.
Big hardware behind the gaming gimmick
The phone itself is no lightweight either. Early details point to a 6.78-inch flat display with 1.5K resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate, powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9500 chip. Add in an 8600mAh dual-cell battery and 100W fast charging, and the Ace 6 Ultra is shaping up to be a very serious device for long gaming sessions.
Still, OnePlus has left people with one obvious question. Is this the long-rumored OnePlus gaming handheld everyone has been hearing about?
Not quite, at least not in the traditional sense. What the company has shown so far is a smartphone that docks into a dedicated controller, not a standalone handheld built from the ground up. And that distinction matters. A previously leaked image of a supposed OnePlus gaming handheld suggested a very different kind of device, one that looked separate from this phone-and-controller setup.
Could a true standalone OnePlus gaming handheld still be on the roadmap? Possibly. But for now, there is no solid evidence to prove it. What is official, though, is more than enough to get gamers talking: OnePlus is turning the Ace 6 Ultra into something that looks, and probably feels, a lot like a portable gaming machine.
