Samsung’s next big design change may have nothing to do with better photos and everything to do with what sits around the cameras.
According to a fresh report out of South Korea, the Galaxy S27 series could introduce a new rear camera layout, ending a design run that has felt largely frozen since the Galaxy S22. Samsung has made minor visual adjustments over the years, but the overall formula has stayed familiar. With the S27 lineup, that long stretch of consistency may finally break.
The interesting part is why. This does not appear to be a redesign driven by new lenses or larger sensors. Instead, the shift is reportedly tied to Samsung’s push toward built in magnets for proper Qi2 magnetic wireless charging.
If that happens, Galaxy S27 phones could support magnetic charging and snap on accessories straight out of the box, without relying on a special case. That would open the door to the kind of ecosystem many users already know well: magnetic chargers, battery packs, wallets, mounts, and stands that click neatly into place.
Samsung has been expected to move in this direction for a while. The company was widely tipped to bring stronger magnetic charging support to the Galaxy S26 family, but that never materialized. Now the signs are pointing further ahead, with the Galaxy S27 shaping up as the more realistic launch window.
The camera bump may be getting in the way
There is a practical engineering problem at the center of this rumor. The current vertical camera arrangement reportedly occupies internal space that would be better used for a circular magnetic ring. If true, Samsung is not changing the camera layout simply to freshen up the phone’s appearance. It may need to rethink the whole rear design to make the hardware fit.
That makes this potential change more significant than a cosmetic refresh. It would signal Samsung adjusting the physical architecture of its flagship phones to support a feature that has quickly become a bigger talking point across the mobile industry: native magnetic accessories and cleaner wireless charging alignment.
There is also a chance Samsung tests this design language earlier on another device. The same report hints that a similar camera arrangement could appear on an upcoming Samsung product before the Galaxy S27 arrives, possibly in the company’s next foldable range.
Still, nothing is locked in. The leak also points to cost control as a possible obstacle. Tipster Lanzuk on Naver claims a major redesign could be delayed or scaled back if research and development costs climb too high. So while a new look for Samsung’s flagship camera module seems increasingly plausible, the timing may depend as much on budget decisions as on engineering ambition.
One thing is clear: if the Galaxy S27 does arrive with a reworked camera layout, the change may say more about Samsung’s plans for magnetic charging than about photography itself.

If native mags land, nice. But Samsung better not hike price or lock out third party mounts. if that’s real, fingers crossed

Wait they'll move the camera just to fit a magnetic ring? clever move, but what about repairs and cases..?
