For a moment, it looked like Xiaomi might revive one of its most intriguing smartphone lines. The Xiaomi Mix 5 started making the rounds in leak circles after references to a device codenamed “hongkong” and model number Q5 surfaced in an internal database. That was enough to spark the usual excitement: a possible 2026 launch, a return of the Mix name, and another shot at the kind of experimental hardware that once made the series stand out.
Now the story has shifted. Well-known Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station says the Mix 5 is not in development at all. According to the insider, Q5 is not connected to a Mix-branded phone. Instead, it reportedly points to Xiaomi’s next flagship family, widely expected to land as part of the Xiaomi 18 series.
That correction matters because the original rumor carried all the hallmarks of a classic Mix comeback. The device was said to feature an under-display selfie camera, echoing the approach Xiaomi used on the Mix 4. There was also talk of more ambitious camera tech, including a magnetic rear lens system, an idea Xiaomi had already teased in 2025. At the time, it sounded like exactly the sort of left-field feature the Mix brand was built for.
Where the experimental hardware may actually land
With the Mix 5 claim now pushed aside, those headline-grabbing features have not vanished. They may simply be headed somewhere else. If Digital Chat Station is right, Xiaomi could be folding some of its more daring concepts into the Xiaomi 18 lineup instead of reviving a separate experimental series.
That possibility lines up with other leaks surrounding Xiaomi’s next-generation flagship phones. Reports suggest the company is preparing a compact high-end model powered by a 2nm chip, likely Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. The same wave of rumors points to dual 200MP cameras, a battery close to 7,000mAh, and a slimmer body with ultra-narrow bezels achieved through LIPO packaging.
In other words, Xiaomi may not need a Mix 5 to make noise. If the Xiaomi 18 series ends up carrying under-display camera tech, advanced imaging hardware, and a more refined design language, the company could deliver the same wow factor under its main flagship banner.
There was also chatter about HyperOS 4 shipping straight out of the box, along with a wider global rollout than the Mix series usually received. That, too, now seems more believable as part of a mainstream flagship launch rather than a niche comeback device.
For now, the clearest takeaway is simple: the Xiaomi Mix 5 rumor appears to have been overstated. Xiaomi fans waiting for the return of the brand may want to look in a different direction. The real story, increasingly, seems to be Xiaomi 18 and how much of the company’s future-facing hardware is being funneled into that range.
The Mix name may be staying on the shelf, but Xiaomi’s experimental ambitions look very much alive.

Pretty balanced take, makes sense tbh. Folding daring ideas into main flagships reaches more ppl, but will it feel 'special' anymore? quick thought

Is this even true? Mix 5 gone, and Q5 just a Xiaomi 18 part? kinda meh but also smart move. Fans gonna be salty though... if thats real then curious how under cam tech holds up
