Sony has stopped playing coy. After weeks of leaks, renders, and pricing chatter, the company has now locked in the date for its next Xperia reveal: May 13. It did not name the phone outright, but the message was hardly subtle. In the teaser posted for the event, Sony wrote, “When brilliance comes full circle, the next one is coming.” That points squarely at the Xperia 1 VIII, the brand’s next premium flagship.
The launch will be streamed on YouTube at 11 AM Japan time on May 13, which lands at 10 PM Eastern time on May 12 for viewers in the US. Sony is also expected to unveil a new camera and lens during the same presentation, so this may turn into a broader showcase of the company’s imaging ambitions rather than a phone-only announcement.
This looks like Sony’s biggest design shift in years
If the leaks are accurate, the Xperia 1 VIII will not just be a routine annual refresh. The most talked-about change is the rear camera layout. Sony appears ready to move away from the familiar vertical camera strip and replace it with a more squared-off camera island. That would give the phone a noticeably different silhouette, and frankly, it is about time. Xperia hardware has long been distinctive, but also unusually conservative.
Reports also suggest the new model will be slightly wider and thicker than the Xperia 1 VII. That may sound minor, but in a market where every millimeter changes how a phone feels in the hand, it matters. Sony does seem set to keep some of the features its core fans still care about, including the 3.5 mm headphone jack, front-facing stereo speakers, and the top and bottom display bezels that avoid punch-hole compromises.

Inside, the Xperia 1 VIII is expected to run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, putting it in line with other top-tier Android flagships due this year. Battery life could also become a headline feature, with rumors pointing to a two-day endurance target. If Sony actually pulls that off without making the phone overly bulky, it would be one of the more meaningful upgrades in this cycle.
The camera story may be even more important. Sony is tipped to introduce a new telephoto sensor alongside a 16 mm ultra-wide camera and a 24 mm main wide-angle shooter. That combination suggests the company is once again leaning hard into its photography-first identity, something that has long separated Xperia phones from rivals chasing mass-market appeal.
The real sticking point may be the price
There is, however, one number hanging over all the excitement. Based on the leaks so far, the Xperia 1 VIII could arrive in Europe at around €1,869. That is an enormous ask, even by 2026 flagship standards. Sony has never been shy about premium pricing, but this would place the phone in territory where even loyalists may start hesitating.
A release date of June 26 has also been rumored, while a US launch still looks unlikely. That would be disappointing, though not exactly surprising. Sony’s smartphone presence in the American market has been fading for years, and the Xperia line now feels increasingly tailored to a narrower global audience that values enthusiast features over mainstream polish.
At this point, the biggest mystery is not whether the Xperia 1 VIII is coming. It clearly is. The real question is whether Sony has managed to keep even one meaningful surprise under wraps. The leaks have painted a very complete picture already. Still, there is room for one last twist, and for Sony’s sake, many fans will be hoping that twist involves a less painful price tag.

Is this even true? Leaks look complete but US launch unlikely, and that price feels bonkers for tweaks + size changes.. curious what Sony's aiming at

Wow, Sony's really going for it. New camera island looks slick, but €1,869? No way. If 2-day battery is real then maybe i'll bite, otherwise pass
