Cyberpunk 2077 has reached a major milestone: CD Projekt RED says the game has now sold 35 million copies worldwide, a sign that the studio's long recovery from its troubled 2020 launch is continuing to pay off.
From launch disaster to steady momentum
When Cyberpunk 2077 debuted in December 2020, its rocky release on last-gen consoles became one of gaming's most notorious rollouts. CD Projekt RED responded with extensive patches and a major 2.0 overhaul released after several years of fixes. Those efforts appear to have paid off — the game has continued to attract new players, and this latest tally comes roughly a year after the company announced the 30 million mark.
While the road to 35 million copies wasn't instant, it illustrates how sustained post-launch support and technical improvements can revive a franchise's reputation. As Michał Nowakowski, joint CEO of CD Projekt RED, put it at the company's Q3 2025 presentation: the game's continued sales 'testify to the franchise's enduring power' and give the studio room to be bolder about its future plans.

Scaling up for Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher 4
CD Projekt RED's current focus remains split between two big projects. The Witcher 4 is the company's priority, with roughly 447 developers assigned to it. Meanwhile, work on the Cyberpunk sequel — internally known as Project Orion or 'Cyberpunk 2' — is steadily expanding: about 135 developers are now working across CDPR's Vancouver, Warsaw and Boston studios, the latter opened specifically to support the sequel.

Once The Witcher 4 ships, more of the studio is expected to shift toward Project Orion, accelerating development on the follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077. For many players, the true test of CD Projekt RED's comeback won’t be sales numbers but the quality and delivery of these next major titles.
For now, the 35 million figure offers a clear data point: Cyberpunk 2077 has moved from a headline-making failure to a sustained commercial success, thanks in large part to the studio's long-term patching and investment in the IP.
