Lenovo is preparing a striking concept for CES 2026: the ThinkPad Rollable XD, a laptop that not only expands vertically with a rollable OLED display but also sports a transparent Gorilla Glass back so you can see the hardware inside. The design blends showpiece aesthetics with practical workspace gains and deep AI integration.

Expandable screen, rethought workflow

The Rollable XD transforms from a compact 13.3-inch laptop into a taller 16-inch display by increasing vertical height rather than width. Lenovo says that translates to up to a 50% larger workspace — ideal for long-form reading, coding, and heavy multitasking. Interestingly, when fully extended the screen is about 0.7 inches smaller than the previous ThinkBook model, but the taller layout changes how you read and arrange apps.

Unlike earlier rollable demos that focused purely on novelty, this implementation aims to be useful every day: a taller viewport reduces scrolling, lets side-by-side panes feel less cramped, and gives document- and code-heavy users a clearer, longer view of content.

See-through design with practical perks

One of the most eye-catching details is the transparent rear cover made from Gorilla Glass Victus 2, developed with Corning. The glass is durable and modern, replacing the traditional aluminum shell with a window into the device. You can actually spot the rolled portion of the flexible OLED beneath the glass — but the reveal isn’t only decorative.

The visible rolled area doubles as a secondary information zone. Lenovo plans to surface calendar alerts, AI chatbot status, quick notifications, and other essential bits on that portion so you can interact with the machine even when the lid appears closed. Think of it as a preview panel for contextual info and lightweight interaction.

AI features are woven into the experience: voice, touch and gesture inputs let users switch display modes or launch apps without digging through menus. Built-in live translation and an advanced voice assistant aim to streamline workflows for professionals who need speed and context-aware help.

Lenovo will present the ThinkPad Rollable XD as a concept in January 2026. While it’s not a guaranteed retail product, the company’s previous premium model, the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6, sells for around $3,299 today, so any production version of the Rollable XD would likely command a higher price if it ever reaches market.

Whether the transparent body and vertically expanding display become mainstream or remain a showpiece, Lenovo’s concept points to an inventive blend of form and function that could reshape how mobile professionals think about screen space and on-device intelligence.

“I love exploring gadgets, apps, and trends that redefine how we connect, work, and play in a digital world.”
