Samsung appears to be shifting priorities for its next generation of foldables: instead of chasing ever-thinner profiles, the company may focus on shaving weight and boosting battery life. New industry whispers hint at surprisingly light Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold models, plus a notably larger cell for the Fold.
What to expect from Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Z Fold 8
According to a South Korean report, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 could drop to roughly 150g, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 might tip the scales at about 200g. If true, those numbers would make both models meaningfully lighter than their predecessors — the Flip 7 currently weighs 188g and the Fold 7 clocks in at 215g. While a 15g reduction for the Fold feels plausible through engineering tweaks, the 38g cut for the Flip sounds optimistic and deserves skepticism.
Battery upgrades are also on the table. The same report claims Samsung could equip the Z Fold 8 with a 5,000mAh battery — roughly 600mAh more than the Fold 7. That would help with all-day endurance on a large dual-display device, though rivals like OPPO’s rumored Find N6 may still offer larger cells in the foldable space.
Why lean into weight savings rather than thinness? Reducing mass improves daily comfort — people carry phones in pockets and hold them for longer stretches — while thicker engineering can allow room for bigger batteries and more robust hinge mechanisms. In other words, a slightly thicker foldable that’s lighter and lasts longer could be a better fit for mainstream users than an ultra-svelte model with compromised endurance.
One caveat: early reports are often based on supply-chain whispers and prototype goals. Samsung still needs to balance materials, hinge design, thermal management, and component costs to hit any target weights or battery capacities without sacrificing durability.
Outside the foldable line, Samsung reportedly plans not to raise Galaxy S26 series prices despite rising component costs, though pre-order perks might be trimmed. Some Galaxy A phones could see price adjustments, reflecting the broader pressure on component budgets.
Whether Samsung delivers a lighter Z Flip 8 or a beefier Z Fold 8, the strategy signals a maturing foldable market: comfort, battery life, and practical upgrades are increasingly front and center.
