2028 BMW 5 Series Facelift: Subtle, Smarter Update

5 Minutes

BMW keeps the 5 Series refresh evolutionary, not revolutionary

Revealed as the eighth-generation model in May 2023, the BMW 5 Series is due for a mid-cycle refresh arriving in 2027 for the 2028 model year. Rather than adopting the bold Neue Klasse styling that has split opinion on models like the iX3 and the upcoming i3 sedan and wagon, the 5 Series facelift takes a restrained approach: tidy exterior tweaks combined with a major leap forward for the cabin and tech.

Exterior: cleaner lines, Nouvelle Klasse hints

Spotted testing in Germany in longroof (wagon) guise, the updated 5 Series wears slimmer kidney grilles and sharper headlamp graphics. Front and rear bumpers have been reworked for a fresher look, and the rear lights now show i3-like graphic elements that echo Neue Klasse motifs without overwhelming the car's conservative silhouette. Camouflage and brake component sizing on the test mules suggest the prototype is not a high-performance wagon, but a premium-oriented longroof variant designed for buyers who want utility without extreme sport tuning.

Inside: tech-first cockpit

The most significant changes are inside. BMW plans to introduce iDrive X and the Panoramic Vision display architecture, bringing a much more tech-forward cockpit. Expect:

  • Optional passenger display, a feature first previewed for the 7 Series facelift
  • Upgraded driver assistance including Security Assistant and enhanced highway and urban ADAS
  • Chassis Control replacing the current Executive Drive Pro active suspension on select variants

This move signals BMW's intent to carry G70 features into the G60 family, modernizing the 5 Series experience for both drivers and passengers.

Sustainability and materials

Following the direction set by the iX3, BMW will increase the use of sustainable interior materials across the 5 Series range. The automaker has committed to using secondary raw materials where possible; the iX3 already contains roughly one third secondary content as part of a broader lifecycle emissions reduction strategy. Expect similar eco-conscious upholstery and trim choices in the facelifted 5 Series.

Powertrains and market positioning

Engine lineups will largely remain consistent because the current four-, six-, and eight-cylinder units were engineered with Euro 7 regulations in mind. BMW will, however, simplify naming: gasoline models will drop the traditional i suffix, while e will remain for plug-in hybrids and d for turbo diesel variants.

Key drivetrain notes:

  • B48: the 2.0-liter turbo four found in the 530i in the United States
  • B58: single-turbo inline-six used in the 540i and as the combustion partner in the 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid
  • 550e xDrive: pairs B58 with a transmission-integrated electric motor, the hybrid system provides a 194 hp electric boost and yields quicker 0-60 mph runs than the mild-hybrid 540i xDrive despite extra weight

Performance highlights include a 0-60 mph time of about 4.1 seconds for the 550e xDrive versus approximately 4.4 seconds for the 540i xDrive. Top speed for both is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

M5 Touring and top-end performance

The M5 remains the high-performance exception within the range. The plug-in hybrid M5 is by default limited to 155 mph, but a 717-horsepower specification can reach 190 mph (305 km/h) if the optional M Driver's Package is selected. In the United States, the only wagon-bodied 5 Series officially offered is the M5 Touring, underlining BMW's niche appeal for high-performance estate buyers.

What this means for buyers

If you prefer discreet, elegant styling and a tech-rich interior, the 2028 5 Series facelift will be an attractive proposition. BMW has balanced conservative design updates with substantial cabin upgrades, stricter sustainability targets, and a drivetrain lineup tuned for Euro 7 compliance. The result is a modernized executive saloon and longroof that stays true to the 5 Series character while embracing next-generation infotainment, driver assistance, and hybrid performance.

Highlights:

  • Subtle exterior evolution with Neue Klasse influences
  • Major interior upgrade featuring iDrive X and Panoramic Vision
  • Euro 7-ready engines and clearer naming conventions
  • Increased use of recycled and sustainable materials

With deliveries expected after the 2027 refresh cycle, BMW's mid-life update aims to keep the 5 Series competitive against Mercedes, Audi, and newcomers pushing premium tech and electrified powertrains.

Cabin tech and recycled trims = smart. Exterior tweaks too subtle for me, but that 550e 0-60 sounds tasty. Will wait for real pics lol
