First fully electric Lexus ES confirmed for Europe

Lexus has officially announced that the all-electric version of its executive sedan, the new ES, will arrive in European showrooms later this year. Unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show last spring, this eighth-generation ES represents a major shift for the model line: for the first time in the ES’s three-decade history, electrified powertrains take center stage.

Platform and powertrain overview

Built on Toyota’s TNGA GA-K architecture, the new ES has been adapted for next-generation electrification. Lexus previously confirmed three distinct drivetrains for the range: two battery-electric variants and a conventional hybrid.

  • ES 350e (FWD): a single-motor EV with a large underfloor battery, rated at up to 300 miles (483 km) in the least powerful configuration when fitted with 19-inch wheels.
  • ES 500e: a higher-spec, all-wheel-drive electric model.
  • Hybrid ES: a 2.5-liter inline-four paired with electric motors, available with either front- or all-wheel drive.

These options are positioned to give buyers a choice between long-range electric performance and a familiar, efficient hybrid setup for markets where full electrification is still building charging infrastructure.

Chassis, handling and safety

Lexus has upgraded the ES’s suspension for sharper dynamics: MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear setup provide a more refined ride and improved body control. The ES also becomes the first Lexus to feature Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 (LSS+ 4.0), the brand’s latest suite of active safety and driver-assist technologies.

For buyers who care about handling and comfort, these mechanical changes signal Lexus’s intent to keep the ES competitive against mainstream executive rivals while offering the smoothness expected in the premium segment.

Design and interior tech

The new ES draws clear inspiration from the LF-ZC concept. The body is longer and more proportioned than its predecessor—6.5 inches (16.5 cm) longer overall with a wheelbase extended by 3 inches (7.6 cm). The result is a sleeker silhouette and more cabin space, which should translate into better rear-seat comfort for executive customers.

Inside, Lexus has modernized the cockpit with a dual-screen layout: a 12.3-inch multi-information display paired with a 14-inch central touchscreen. Navigation graphics and maps are integrated into the digital gauge cluster, and an available Mark Levinson surround sound system underscores Lexus’s focus on premium in-car experience.

Market positioning and competition

Arriving in Europe later this year—likely around the same time as the U.S. launch—the electric ES aims at buyers seeking a premium, comfortable executive sedan with strong electrified credentials. Competitors will include other mid- to large-size luxury electrified sedans from established premium brands. Lexus’s strategy blends familiar luxury cues with a clear push toward electrification, giving traditional Lexus buyers a logical upgrade path.

"This is the forerunner of Lexus's next-generation electrification lineup," the brand said during the rollout, underlining that the ES is a flagship for the company’s BEV ambitions.

Quick highlights

  • Platform: TNGA GA-K, adapted for EVs
  • Powertrains: ES 350e (FWD, up to 300 miles / 483 km), ES 500e (AWD), and 2.5L hybrid
  • Suspension: MacPherson front, multi-link rear
  • Safety: Lexus Safety System+ 4.0
  • Interior: 12.3-inch multi-info + 14-inch touchscreen, Mark Levinson audio

What we don’t know yet

Pricing for the new electric ES has not been published. For reference, the outgoing ES starts at about $43,435 in the U.S. Lexus will likely announce European prices closer to the launch, when formal specifications and equipment levels for individual markets are finalized.

If you’re tracking the shift from ICE to electrified luxury, the new ES is an important indicator of Lexus’s strategy: familiar luxury, more space, advanced safety tech, and a clear move to battery-electric power where customer demand and infrastructure allow. Expect more detailed European-spec figures — power outputs, charging speeds and local range testing results — as the launch approaches.

Nice step toward BEV but feels a bit safe. Sleeker looks, more rear space, but where's the wow factor? Pricing will prob kill it, unless they keep it sane.

Is this even true? 300 miles on a FWD ES with 19s sounds optimistic, esp if charging speeds arent great. Curious about real world range, and battery size too.
