Denza says it has just pushed the electric car range race into new territory.
BYD’s luxury-focused sub-brand has updated the Denza Z9 GT in China with a new electrified powertrain and larger battery options—claiming a CLTC-certified driving range of up to 1,036 km (644 miles) on a single charge. If that figure translates anywhere close to the real world, it positions the Z9 GT as one of the most compelling long-range EVs on the market, and a serious statement ahead of Denza’s planned expansion into the UK and Europe.
Denza’s rise: BYD tech, premium positioning
Denza has quickly become one of the most watched names in China’s fast-moving new energy vehicle market. The brand has already found mainstream success with the Denza D9 MPV, which has reportedly racked up around 300,000 sales in under three years. That kind of volume is a clear sign Denza is more than a boutique badge—it’s becoming a high-end pillar within the wider BYD ecosystem.
The pitch is straightforward: take BYD’s battery and electric drivetrain know-how, then wrap it in a more luxurious, design-led package. In Denza’s current line-up, that includes:
- Denza N7: a mid-size SUV aimed at premium family buyers
- Denza Z9: a luxury saloon positioned as a high-tech, long-distance cruiser
- Denza Z9 GT: a sleek shooting brake/fastback estate-style model offered as both a pure EV and a plug-in hybrid
The big update: new batteries and a headline range claim
The refreshed Denza Z9 GT is where the attention is right now. Denza says the latest changes deliver a major battery performance uplift—quoted at around 64% over the previous setup—helping unlock a maximum CLTC range of 1,036 km.
Battery options (EV)
According to reports from China, the updated all-electric Z9 GT is set to offer two battery sizes:
- 102 kWh battery: up to 820 km (509 miles) CLTC
- 122.5 kWh battery: up to 1,036 km (644 miles) CLTC
Those are enormous numbers by any standard, especially in the premium EV space where customers often compare range, charging speed, and comfort as a package.

Plug-in hybrid gets a major electric-only boost
Denza hasn’t ignored the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version either. The Z9 GT PHEV reportedly moves to a new 63.82 kWh battery, with Denza claiming an electric-only CLTC range of more than 400 km (248 miles).
That matters because it’s not just “good for a hybrid”—it’s the kind of EV-only distance that can cover several days of commuting for many drivers without using any petrol at all. It also dwarfs the current Z9 GT PHEV figure (around 201 km / 125 miles CLTC), suggesting Denza is trying to make the PHEV version feel like an EV most of the time.
Charging: spotted using BYD’s 1,500 kW flash chargers
Range grabs headlines, but charging infrastructure is what makes long-distance EV ownership feel effortless. The Z9 GT has been spotted using BYD’s latest ultra-high-power charging hardware in China—reported to support up to 1,500 kW.
If those “flash-charging” numbers are achieved in practice (and paired with compatible vehicles), it signals a future where topping up a large battery could take minutes rather than a long motorway stop.
CLTC vs WLTP vs EPA: why the 644-mile figure needs context
There’s a crucial caveat: the Denza Z9 GT’s 644-mile claim is based on the CLTC test cycle (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle). Like any lab-based standard, it provides a useful benchmark—but CLTC is generally viewed as more optimistic than Europe’s WLTP figures, and often noticeably more generous than the US EPA range estimates.
Real-world electric vehicle range depends heavily on speed, temperature, wheel and tyre choice, and driving style. A large, powerful premium EV can see range drop significantly in cold weather or at sustained motorway speeds.
A more realistic expectation—once WLTP-style testing and on-road results arrive—could still be extremely competitive. Even if the Z9 GT lands somewhere in the region of 380–450 miles in everyday mixed driving (depending on conditions), it would remain a standout long-range electric car.
How it stacks up against luxury EV rivals
The long-range EV conversation is currently dominated by a handful of flagship models. For reference:
- Mercedes-Benz EQS is officially rated up to 481 miles on WLTP in certain versions (though real-world range is typically lower)
- Newer rivals, including upcoming long-range Volvo EVs, are also targeting the 500-mile WLTP conversation
Denza’s strategy is clear: combine large battery capacity with strong efficiency, then add premium design and tech to tempt buyers away from established European luxury brands.
UK and Europe launch: Denza is coming west
For now, the Denza Z9 and Z9 GT remain China-only models. But Denza has indicated plans to introduce both the saloon and the fastback estate in the UK and Europe this year.
If Denza can pair its range and charging story with competitive pricing, strong aftersales support, and a refined cabin experience, it could become a genuine disruptor in the premium EV market—especially for drivers who want EV convenience without sacrificing long-distance usability.
As the industry pushes to win over the last group of EV skeptics, one point keeps coming up: drivers want electric cars that don’t require lifestyle compromises. A comfortable, premium EV that can genuinely cover “400-odd miles” between charging stops—at real motorway speeds—would be a turning point. Denza’s Z9 GT is now one of the most interesting candidates trying to prove it.

If the Z9 GT hits 400+ miles real-world, that's huge. feels a bit overhyped tho, but fast charging would seal it.

1,036 km? CLTC tends to be dreamy… will it survive motorway runs and winter temps? curious but doubtful, gotta see WLTP/EPA numbers.
