Could an Electric VW ID. Beetle Make a Surprise Comeback

Some cars never really disappear. They simply wait for the right era to return.

The Volkswagen Beetle is one of those machines. For decades it rolled across continents with its unmistakable silhouette—rounded roof, friendly face, and a personality few cars ever manage to achieve. Production finally ended in 2019, yet the idea of the Beetle never quite left the conversation. Now, as Volkswagen reshapes its electric future, the possibility of a modern revival is quietly creeping back into view.

The shift happening inside Volkswagen is bigger than it may seem. The company is gradually stepping away from the early strategy that kept its electric ID lineup visually and conceptually separate from traditional combustion models. That divide is fading. In the near future, familiar nameplates will exist in parallel—one powered by gasoline, the other by electricity.

Think along the lines of a standard Polo and an electric ID. Polo. A classic Golf sitting beside an ID. Golf. Even performance variants like the ID. GTI are already part of the conversation.

For drivers and fans, that means Volkswagen’s portfolio could soon blend its heritage models with next-generation electric technology rather than treating them as completely different worlds.

When Old Icons Meet the EV Era

The idea isn’t entirely new. Volkswagen already dipped into its history when it launched the ID. Buzz, a modern electric reinterpretation of the beloved Type 2 Microbus. The design borrowed heavily from the original T1 van while packaging it in a futuristic EV platform.

That success has sparked imagination across the automotive design community. If the Microbus can return as an electric icon, why not the Beetle?

Industrial designer Giorgi Tedoradze—known online as tedoradze.giorgi—recently explored that exact thought experiment. His digital concept imagines a fully electric Volkswagen ID. Beetle arriving sometime around 2027.

The renderings keep the Beetle’s instantly recognizable DNA intact: the curved roofline, compact stance, and rounded front end. But this isn’t a nostalgic copy-paste exercise. The concept stretches the idea further, adapting the car for a modern compact class.

The most striking twist? Extra doors.

Tedoradze’s interpretation adds a second set of doors ahead of the traditional front pair, transforming the Beetle into a four-door compact hatchback. In theory, that would position it closer to vehicles like the upcoming ID. Golf—making it more practical and competitive in today’s market.

From a business perspective, that move would make sense. Compact electric hatchbacks are expected to become one of the most competitive EV segments in Europe and beyond. A Beetle-shaped EV with everyday usability could carve out a unique niche between nostalgia and practicality.

Of course, this concept exists purely in the digital world for now. Volkswagen itself has made no official announcement about reviving the Beetle in electric form.

Still, the timing is intriguing. As the brand rethinks its design language and merges its ICE and EV identities, bringing back one of the most recognizable cars in automotive history—this time powered by electricity—no longer feels impossible.

Sometimes the past has a funny way of sneaking into the future.

“Cars are evolving faster than ever. I cover electric vehicles, smart mobility, and the future of transportation worldwide.”

is resurrecting the Beetle smart? cool retro vibes but turning it into a 4-door hatch might feel forced, could end up gimmicky, or maybe surprisingly great idk

Whoa, Beetle EV? nostalgia hit hard. The extra doors idea is actually clever, makes it usable not just a toy. please keep that goofy face tho...
