The Range Rover Velar has always been the quiet one in the family. Not as rugged as the Defender. Not as lavishly imposing as the full-size Range Rover. Just… there. Stylish, understated, sometimes overlooked. But the next chapter might change that entirely.
Fresh renderings based on recent prototype sightings suggest the upcoming 2027 Range Rover Velar is about to undergo a dramatic identity shift. And it’s not subtle. The new model appears to blur the line between SUV and fastback sedan, trading the traditional upright crossover stance for something lower, sleeker, and unexpectedly athletic.
Spy photographers recently captured camouflaged test vehicles braving winter conditions. Even beneath heavy disguise, the silhouette told a different story. The roofline drops more decisively toward the rear. The body sits closer to the ground. And the overall proportions feel closer to a high-riding grand tourer than a conventional luxury SUV.
Now, digital artists have peeled away that camouflage.
Renderings circulating online—developed from those test mules—show a Velar that leans heavily into modern electric design language. The front fascia is cleaner and more horizontal. The grille appears wider but shorter, flanked by razor-thin headlights that stretch outward toward the fenders. It’s recognizably Range Rover, yet noticeably more futuristic.
The familiar Range Rover script still sits proudly across the leading edge of the hood, a reminder that despite the visual evolution, the Velar remains firmly within the brand’s luxury DNA.
Less SUV, More Electric Grand Tourer
Look at the profile and the transformation becomes obvious. The doors appear slightly shorter, the side glass more compact. The roof arcs smoothly toward the rear, creating a coupe-like sweep that’s far more dramatic than today’s Velar.
At the back, the design grows bolder. Slim horizontal taillights stretch across the width of the tailgate, visually linked by the Range Rover badge. Above them sits a chunky roof spoiler, giving the rear a muscular, almost performance-oriented edge. Lower down, a redesigned bumper and diffuser frame a relocated license plate holder.
The proportions hint at another shift: reduced ground clearance and larger wheels. That combination reinforces the sense that this Velar isn’t chasing hardcore off-road credentials. Instead, it seems tuned for on-road elegance and electric-era aerodynamics.
One rendered version shows the SUV finished in deep metallic red, contrasted by a black roof and dark lower cladding—an aesthetic that highlights the new shape’s flowing lines.
And the biggest change may lie beneath the surface.
Industry chatter suggests the next-generation Velar will launch exclusively as an electric vehicle. If accurate, it would mark the first Range Rover model to debut solely with battery power. That puts it squarely in the ring with rivals such as the Porsche Macan Electric and other premium EV crossovers now flooding the market.
The vehicle is expected to ride on Jaguar Land Rover’s upcoming Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), a platform designed specifically for next-generation electric models. Beyond the Velar itself, this architecture is rumored to underpin several future projects—including a smaller, more accessible Defender variant sometimes referred to as the "Baby Defender."
For now, though, many of the technical details remain under wraps. Battery capacity, electric motor configuration, driving range, and performance figures are still unknown. Even the interior remains a mystery; spy photographers have yet to capture a clear look inside the prototype cabins.
That leaves plenty of unanswered questions. Will the Velar lean toward performance? Will it prioritize luxury cruising range? Or attempt to strike a balance between the two?
What seems clear is the timeline. Production of the all-new Velar is expected to begin at JLR’s Halewood facility in the UK in early 2027. If development continues on schedule, the official unveiling could happen sometime before the end of the coming year.
