It’s not every day a new electric SUV quietly lands in the UK with a spec sheet that makes you look twice—but that’s exactly what Changan has done with the Deepal S05.
Already circulating in parts of Europe, the S05 has now officially arrived on British roads, bringing with it a mix of long-range practicality, fast-charging tech, and a cabin that leans heavily into comfort-first design.
At its core sits a 68.8kWh LFP battery. In rear-wheel-drive form, it stretches up to 303 miles on the WLTP cycle—more than enough for week-long commuting or longer motorway runs without constant charging anxiety. Opt for all-wheel drive, and the figure dips slightly to 278 miles, trading a bit of range for added traction.

Fast charging that actually saves time
The S05 isn’t just about how far it goes—it’s about how quickly it gets back on the road. Thanks to 3C fast-charging capability, the battery can jump from 30% to 80% in just 15 minutes under the right conditions. That’s the kind of stop that feels more like a coffee break than a charging session.
Underneath, a 200 kW (268 hp) electric motor delivers solid performance, keeping things responsive whether you’re navigating city traffic or merging onto faster roads.
Step inside, and the tone shifts completely. This isn’t a stripped-down EV interior chasing minimalism for the sake of it. Instead, it leans into comfort and tech in equal measure. Heated and ventilated vegan leather seats come as standard, and the front passenger gets a full-recline “zero gravity” seat—an unusual touch in this segment.
The dashboard is dominated by a 15.4-inch rotating touchscreen, paired with an augmented reality head-up display that overlays navigation cues directly into the driver’s line of sight. A 14-speaker audio system and wireless smartphone connectivity round out a cabin clearly designed to feel premium without trying too hard.

Built for Europe, not just shipped to it
What makes the Deepal S05 more interesting is where—and how—it was developed. This isn’t a car adapted as an afterthought for European buyers. It was shaped at Changan’s design centre in Turin and refined through engineering work in Birmingham, giving it a distinctly European driving character.
Safety hasn’t been overlooked either. The S05 carries a five-star Euro NCAP rating and comes equipped with 17 advanced driver assistance systems. Cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors work together to enable Level 2 semi-autonomous driving, including a 540-degree surround-view system that makes tight urban manoeuvres far less stressful.
For the UK market, production takes place at Changan’s Rayong facility in Thailand—a plant established specifically for right-hand-drive markets. Around 60% of components are sourced locally, reflecting a broader strategy to scale globally without losing cost efficiency.
This launch is just one piece of a bigger puzzle. Changan is now present in 16 European markets and is preparing to expand further into Italy, Spain, and Poland. The Deepal S05 feels less like a one-off entry and more like a signal of intent.
And if this is the baseline, established players in the compact electric SUV space may need to start paying closer attention.

Is the 15 minute charge claim real on UK chargers? sounds optimistic, where are the caveats? also curious about actual winter range, anyone tested?
