BYD Sealion 05 DM-i Surfaces Early at Dealers in China

5 Minutes

The BYD Sealion 05 DM-i is already turning heads in China, even before presales officially begin. Display cars have started appearing at dealerships, and the message is clear: BYD is getting ready to push another closely watched plug-in hybrid crossover into a fiercely competitive market.

At first glance, the Sealion 05 DM-i follows the familiar BYD playbook, but there are enough fresh details to make it stand out. The PHEV crossover wears a clean, rounded body, slim headlights, a single full-width rear light strip, and semi-hidden door handles. Dealer cars have been spotted on 18-inch wheels, with a choice of exterior and interior finishes that should help the model appeal to a wide range of buyers.

A compact SUV with a bigger footprint than the BEV

The Sealion 05 DM-i measures 4,620 mm long, 1,860 mm wide, and 1,630 mm tall, riding on a 2,770 mm wheelbase. That makes it 100 mm longer than the battery-electric Sealion 05, giving the hybrid version a more substantial presence on the road. It also brings the practical touches buyers expect in this class, including black plastic cladding around the wheel arches and side skirts, a sporty roof spoiler, a rear wiper, and an active front air intake.

Color options are expected to include Gray, Ocean White, Green, Sun White, Pink, and Orange. In other words, BYD is not playing it safe here. There is a bit of personality in the palette, which could matter in a segment where many rivals look almost interchangeable.

Inside, the cabin continues the same modern, clean approach. The dashboard is centered around an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch floating touchscreen. The center console features adjustable air vents, a wireless charging pad rated at 50W, two cup holders, and a row of physical buttons that should make everyday use less frustrating than touch-only setups. The gear selector sits behind the three-spoke steering wheel.

Equipment is strong for the class. The Sealion 05 DM-i adds a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, power-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, eight speakers, an electrically operated tailgate, and a rear armrest with dual cup holders. It is the kind of spec sheet designed to make showroom visitors linger a little longer.

Big electric range, modest price, serious intent

Under the skin, the new crossover uses BYD’s fifth-generation DM hybrid system. Power comes from a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine producing 74 kW, paired with a permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor rated at 120 kW. Battery options are said to include 26.628 kWh and 34.275 kWh LFP packs, with claimed CLTC electric range figures ranging from 220 km to 305 km.

That top figure is the headline grabber. A plug-in hybrid SUV promising 305 km of electric-only driving is no small thing, especially at this price point. It gives the Sealion 05 DM-i a very different appeal from the typical short-range PHEV, moving it closer to the kind of daily usability that many urban buyers want.

There is also some interesting back-and-forth around the battery lineup. Earlier filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed an 18.3 kWh battery and a 102 km WLTC range, but reports now suggest that version will not go on sale. Instead, the model appears to be launching with the larger battery choices and a more upmarket equipment mix.

Technology should be another major selling point. The Sealion 05 DM-i is expected to feature DiSus-C continuous damping control and DiPilot 300, BYD’s LiDAR-based driver assistance suite. That puts the crossover squarely in the conversation for buyers looking for more than just efficiency and low running costs.

According to dealer information, presales will open with four trims:

  • BYD Sealion 05 DM-i 220 Starter, 96,000 yuan, about 13,950 USD
  • BYD Sealion 05 DM-i 220 Navigator, 106,000 yuan, about 15,400 USD
  • BYD Sealion 05 DM-i 220 Smart Navigator, 116,000 yuan, about 16,850 USD
  • BYD Sealion 05 DM-i 305 Smart Navigator, 126,000 yuan, about 18,300 USD

Put simply, BYD seems to be aiming squarely at buyers who want the flexibility of a plug-in hybrid, the polish of a tech-rich interior, and the kind of electric range that makes the daily commute feel almost fully electric. If the reported specs hold up, the Sealion 05 DM-i could become one of the more closely watched new crossovers in China’s fast-moving NEV market.

305 km EV range in a PHEV? is this even true... China test numbers are weird, but if real this could kill the short‑range PHEV market. price feels unreal tho
