Porsche has started the countdown, and the next 911 reveal already sounds like trouble in the best possible way. On April 14, the company will pull the covers off a new variant it describes as “particularly fun” and built around “pure driving pleasure.” That is classic Porsche language. Short on details, heavy on intrigue.
The brand has not said exactly what this new 911 will be, but the clues are already doing the rounds. The strongest theory points to the long-rumored 911 GT3 Cabriolet, a car enthusiasts have talked about for years but never quite seen brought to life. One teaser image is all Porsche has offered so far, and it keeps the car hidden under a sheet, leaving just enough visible to fuel speculation.
Still, there are hints if you look closely. There’s no rear wing, which immediately rules out the more extreme track-focused versions like a new GT2 RS. Some observers also believe the hood shows GT3-style vents, while the presence of traditional door handles, rather than the flush units used on Porsche’s non-GT 911 models, adds another useful clue. The name 911 Speedster briefly entered the conversation too, although the teased car appears to have a proper roof, which makes that theory less convincing.
If Porsche is indeed preparing a GT3 Cabriolet, the result could be one of the most appealing 911s in years.
That would mean the familiar naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six, the sort of engine that doesn’t so much rev as sing, and likely a six-speed manual transmission. On paper, that gearbox may not be the quickest choice. In a roof-off 911 built for feel rather than stopwatch glory, though, it might be exactly the right one.
Porsche says the reveal will be streamed live on its website and YouTube channel, with the presentation set for 10 a.m. ET. For now, all anyone can do is wait, watch the clock, and try not to read too much into a single covered car. But with Porsche, that is half the fun.
