Nio’s next flagship is no longer a mystery on a screen or in a teaser campaign. Display cars for the ES9 have started landing in showrooms across China, and that usually means one thing: the real reveal is just around the corner.

Tonight’s technology launch, set for 7 pm Beijing time on April 9, should finally put the spotlight on the brand’s biggest electric SUV yet. Nio is expected to use the event to announce pre-sales pricing and key technical details, giving buyers and rivals alike a much clearer look at what this new heavyweight is bringing to the table. The timing is no accident. With the Beijing Auto Show opening on April 24, the company is clearly trying to build heat before the larger stage opens.

There’s already a familiar benchmark in place. Nio’s current range-topper, the ET9 executive sedan, starts at 768,000 yuan, or about $112,390, and that number gives a strong hint at where the ES9 may land in the premium pecking order.

A larger, more serious Nio SUV

According to earlier regulatory filings, the ES9 stretches 5,365 mm from nose to tail, with a 3,250 mm wheelbase. That puts it ahead of the third-generation ES8 in size and firmly in full-size SUV territory. This is not the sort of electric family hauler that hides in the background. It is meant to make a statement.

The styling follows Nio’s latest design language, led by a Shark Nose front end that gives the SUV a more commanding presence. It looks like the brand wanted something that feels more sculpted, more expensive, and a little more serious than the usual soft-edged EV crowd.

Under the skin, the ES9 is expected to showcase some of Nio’s newest in-house technology, including the Shenji NX9031 driver-assistance chip and the SkyRide chassis system. Inside, the cabin should feature a 15.6-inch AMOLED floating center display and SkyOS, the company’s own vehicle operating system, reinforcing Nio’s push to control more of the tech stack itself.

Performance is shaping up to be just as ambitious. The dual-motor setup is said to deliver a combined 520 kW and 700 Nm of torque, giving the big SUV the sort of punch that should keep it from feeling oversized when the road opens up.

Power comes from a 102-kWh battery pack supplied by CATL, with a claimed pure electric range of up to 620 kilometers. For a vehicle of this size, that is a headline number that will matter a great deal to buyers weighing long-distance usability against luxury and space.

Nio has also been busy showing the ES9 in tough conditions. Last month, the company released a winter testing video from temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius, a clear attempt to prove the SUV is not just a showroom showpiece. One of the most eye-catching moments was a high-speed tire blowout test at 150 km/h, which the ES9 reportedly handled successfully.

Then came the tighter stuff. In another comparison shown in the video, the ES9 was seen threading narrow roads alongside the smaller Firefly EV, hinting at surprisingly good maneuverability for such a large machine. If that translates to real-world driving, the ES9 could end up being one of those rare full-size electric SUVs that feels far less cumbersome than its dimensions suggest.

The official launch is expected in late May, with customer deliveries due to begin on June 1. For now, though, the message is simple: Nio is about to add another high-profile name to its lineup, and the ES9 looks set to become one of the brand’s most important cars yet.
