BYD’s Third-Gen Yuan Plus Is Set to Steal the Show

3 Minutes

BYD is heading into the Beijing Auto Show with something more than a routine refresh. The third-generation Yuan Plus is about to make its debut on Friday, April 24, and this one looks like a meaningful step forward for one of the brand’s most important global EVs.

The company has already teased the launch on Weibo, and the headline feature is hard to miss: BYD’s latest flash-charging technology will be part of the package. That matters. A lot. The automaker says its newest setup can take a battery from 10% to 70% in around five minutes, while also improving charging performance in cold weather, where many EVs still struggle.

That technology sits alongside BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, introduced last month as part of the brand’s next big push. The message is clear. Faster charging, better efficiency, less range anxiety. BYD seems determined to make those promises feel less like marketing and more like everyday reality.

And it is not just talk. More than a dozen BYD models already use the new battery and charging hardware, while the company continues to expand its flash-charging network. Infrastructure is often the missing piece in the EV puzzle. BYD clearly knows it.

A familiar name, but a bigger mission

The Yuan Plus has been a key player in BYD’s international expansion since its original launch in China on February 19, 2022. On the same day, it also opened for pre-sales in Australia under the Atto 3 name, kicking off a run that has taken it into dozens of overseas markets.

In China, the current second-generation Yuan Plus Smart Driving Edition is priced from 115,800 yuan to 145,800 yuan, or roughly $16,980 to $21,370. The new generation, however, appears to be more than a simple update.

According to previous regulatory filings, the third-generation Yuan Plus measures 4,665 mm long, 1,895 mm wide, and 1,675 mm high, with a 2,770 mm wheelbase. That makes it longer than the current model, which should translate into more cabin room and, ideally, a more relaxed ride.

Battery choices will include 57.545 kWh and 68.547 kWh packs, with claimed CLTC ranges of 540 km and 630 km respectively. Under the skin, the SUV will continue with a rear-mounted single-motor layout, available in two outputs: 200 kW and 240 kW. In plain English, that means the new Yuan Plus is still being built to keep pace with mainstream electric SUVs on performance while pushing further on efficiency.

The update also lines up neatly with BYD’s European playbook. The new Atto 3 Evo has already been launched in the UK, where it starts at £38,990, offers up to 316 miles of range, and supports high-power DC charging. That combination of longer range and quicker top-ups is exactly what buyers in mature EV markets are asking for.

So this is more than a reveal. It is BYD sharpening one of its best-known export models for the next phase of the electric car race. And at a major show in Beijing, that is exactly the kind of move that gets attention.

Nice move by BYD, but flash charging network needs to be everywhere. Feels a bit like marketing until I see chargers in my city. Also how's battery longevity?

Hmm 10% to 70% in 5 mins? seems wild, is this even true or some lab number? cold weather boost sounds promising tho, curious about real world tests.
