BYD Sealion 08 Arrives With 643 HP and Huge Range

4 Minutes

BYD has just pulled the covers off a new heavyweight, and it does not look like the sort of electric SUV that plans to sit quietly in the background. The Sealion 08 arrives as a flagship for the brand’s Ocean series, bringing serious size, serious tech, and a headline figure that will turn heads well beyond China.

At first glance, the Sealion 08 leans hard into BYD’s Marine Aesthetics design language. The styling is clean and fluid, with slim headlights, a broad stance, and bodywork that avoids unnecessary drama. But this is no sleek city crossover playing at being premium. It is big. Very big. Measuring 5,115 mm long, 1,999 mm wide, and 1,800 mm tall, with a 3,030 mm wheelbase, it lands just 92 mm shy of the Mercedes-Benz GLS.

Inside, BYD is offering both five-seat and six-seat layouts, a clear sign that the Sealion 08 is being aimed at families who want space without giving up on technology. The cabin also benefits from hardware already seen on the larger BYD Great Tang crossover, including dual-chamber air suspension and rear-wheel steering. That combination should help this sizeable SUV feel a lot smaller on the road than its dimensions suggest.

The real talking point, though, is what sits underneath the body. The Sealion 08 uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup with a combined peak output of 480 kW, or 643 hp. That is enough to send this full-size electric SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in roughly 5 seconds. For something this large, that is properly quick.

Range is another area where BYD is making bold claims. The company says the Sealion 08 can travel up to 900 km on the CLTC cycle, which would place it among the most far-reaching electric SUVs on sale. Battery capacity has not been officially disclosed, but reports from CarNewsChina suggest it may share the same 130.5 kWh LFP pack used in the Great Tang. If that proves accurate, the numbers start to make a lot more sense.

Fast charging, big ambitions

BYD is also pushing its flash-charging tech here, and the brand says the Sealion 08 can charge from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes. That is the sort of figure that changes how people think about long-distance EV travel, even if real-world results will depend on conditions and charging infrastructure.

The Sealion 08 was shown at the Beijing Auto Show 2026, and BYD has confirmed that it will reach the market this year. Pricing is expected to land around the 300,000 yuan mark, or roughly 43,950 USD, which would position it firmly in the premium family SUV bracket.

That timing matters. BYD is coming off a strong start to 2026, with China EV DataTracker reporting 688,939 global sales in Q1 alone. Of that total, 303,150 units were delivered in China, meaning overseas markets accounted for more than half of the brand’s volume. That is no small shift. It shows just how quickly BYD is evolving from a domestic powerhouse into a genuine global contender.

The Sealion 08 fits neatly into that story. It has the size, the performance, the range, and the tech to compete far beyond China. Whether it can live up to those numbers in the real world is the next question. But on paper, BYD has built something with real presence.

“I cover automotive innovation, electric vehicles, and the future of mobility — where technology meets sustainability.”

Is 10% to 97% in nine minutes for real? Feels like lab numbers. Also 643hp in a family SUV, will be fun but what's efficiency and battery degradation?

Woah 900 km and 9 min flash charge?? If BYD pulls that off long road trips change forever. It's huge though, feels like a luxury bus lol, curious to see pics
