MG 07 Teased as SAIC Pushes Deeper Into EVs

MG is clearly done playing it safe. With the first official images of the new MG 07 now out in China, SAIC-owned MG Motor is signaling a bigger ambition in the electric sedan space, and this one looks aimed straight at the heart of the mainstream EV market.

The MG 07 appears to be a mid- to large-size electric sedan, and from the first teaser images, it is leaning heavily into coupe-like styling rather than conservative family-car design. The car shown wears a vivid purple finish, a bold choice that feels intentional. MG seems to be chasing younger buyers who want something cleaner, sharper, and a little less anonymous than the average electric saloon.

What stands out immediately is the shape. The MG 07 uses a sweeping fastback silhouette more commonly seen on sleek electric coupes, while short front overhangs and a stretched wheelbase suggest the brand is also paying close attention to cabin space and aerodynamic efficiency. It is the kind of profile carmakers use when they want an EV to look modern before anyone even reads the spec sheet.

Then there is the detail that really matters: a LiDAR unit mounted on the roof. That is not just a styling flourish. It makes the MG 07 the first MG-branded model to feature LiDAR, pointing to a more serious step into advanced driver-assistance technology. In a market where smart driving features are becoming almost as important as range and charging speed, that could be one of the car's biggest selling points.

More than just another MG electric car

The timing is telling. MG's current electric line-up is still relatively narrow. On one side sits the MG4 EV, the brand's affordable hatchback and one of its most accessible battery-electric offerings. On the other is the MG Cyberster, a dramatic electric roadster built more for image and excitement than volume. The MG 07 lands somewhere in the middle, potentially giving MG a more practical and more broadly appealing electric sedan with enough technology to stay relevant in China's brutally competitive EV market.

Pricing will be critical, of course. The MG 07 is expected to launch later this year with an estimated price range of about €19,200 to €25,600, placing it in one of the busiest parts of the market. That bracket gives it a shot at buyers looking for a stylish electric sedan without jumping into premium-brand territory.

For context, the budget-focused MG4 EV currently starts at roughly €8,800 in China, falling to around €8,400 with limited-time incentives. The much more niche MG Cyberster sits at the other end of the scale, priced from about €41,000 to €46,900. The MG 07 could become the model that links those two worlds: more aspirational than the MG4, but far more attainable than the Cyberster.

And SAIC is not stopping there. MG recently also previewed the new MG 4X, a pure-electric SUV set to open for pre-orders on May 11. Previously released information suggests it will use a semi-solid-state battery and deliver a driving range of at least 510 kilometres. That matters because it shows MG is building out its EV portfolio on multiple fronts at once, not just with one halo car or one bargain model.

So the MG 07 is not arriving in isolation. It looks like part of a broader reset for MG's electric strategy, one that mixes design, smarter tech, and a wider spread of body styles. If the final production version stays close to what these teaser images promise, MG may have found a very timely way to broaden its appeal in the world's biggest EV market.

Is this even real tech or just a showpiece? LiDAR on the roof ok, but will MG charge extra for the features? purple's daring, risky move.
