Audi's compact electric newcomer has been the subject of growing curiosity — and also a little online ridicule — after a set of unofficial CGI images surfaced this week. The renders, published by Digimods Design on YouTube, show a generic and uninspired take on what many expect will be Audi's entry-level EV, often referred to in the press as the A2 e-tron.
While the name A2 e-tron is not officially confirmed, it makes sense historically and logically. Audi's original A2 small MPV was produced between 1999 and 2005, penned by Luc Donckerwolke, and the revival of the A2 nameplate for a compact electric model fits Audi's naming patterns. That said, the car could still wear a different badge — some reports suggest Q2 e-tron as an alternative — until Audi makes a final announcement.
What the prototypes show vs what the CGI got wrong
Recent prototypes that have transitioned toward production body panels reveal several clear design cues: a slightly arched roofline, muscular rear shoulders, a split headlight signature, Audi's familiar closed-off grille treatment for EVs, flush door handles, and a slim LED rear light bar linking the taillights. Unusually, the test mules appear to use a rear screen plus an additional lower glass section to improve visibility, and the rear bumper looks conventional rather than overly stylized.
Against that backdrop, the Digimods renders feel off-key. They lack the split-light signature, the pronounced shoulder volumes, and the subtleties of the production cues. The result is a bland, generic silhouette that doesn't reflect the sharper, more purposeful look hinted at by the prototypes.
Likely technical specs and market position
Word on the street suggests the new compact Audi will be built on VW Group's MEB+ platform, which ties it to future models like the Volkswagen ID. Polo and ID. Cross. That architecture points to a front-wheel-drive layout for most versions, with an entry powertrain built around a single electric motor driving the front axle.
