BMW’s next X7 is starting to come into focus, and if these fresh renderings are close to the real thing, the brand’s biggest SUV is heading for a cleaner, sharper, and more confident look rather than a dramatic design reset.
That matters, because the upcoming model is not just another facelift. This will be the second-generation X7, the successor to the current G07, which first arrived in late 2018 before receiving its mid-cycle update in 2022. That refresh introduced the now-familiar split headlight layout, a detail that divided opinion at first but now seems firmly embedded in BMW’s design language. The next X7 appears ready to refine that idea instead of walking away from it.
The new renderings shared by digital artist Kelsonik suggest a front end that feels more disciplined than experimental. The daytime running lights are slimmer and stretched wider across the fascia, giving the SUV a lower, more planted visual stance. Beneath them, the main headlamp units move into tall vertical sections in the bumper, replacing the more horizontal treatment seen on today’s model. The lower intake also grows taller, while the kidney grille looks broader and more upright, adding the sort of presence buyers in this segment tend to expect.
From the side, the design appears tidier. Hidden door handles smooth out the bodywork, character lines are toned down, and the overall profile looks less busy than the outgoing X7. Even small details seem aimed at visual refinement, with more discreet roof rails and larger door mirrors helping the SUV strike a modern luxury tone without trying too hard.
At the rear, BMW seems set to make the tail more visually substantial. The taillights are larger and extend further into the tailgate, which helps widen the stance. The license plate shifts lower into the bumper, and the rear bumper itself mirrors some of the themes up front. There is still a roof spoiler in place, and the familiar BMW roundel remains exactly where you would expect it: front, rear, and centered on the wheels.

Not Neue Klasse, but still clearly new
One of the more interesting details here is what the X7 is not doing. Unlike some of BMW’s upcoming models tied more directly to the Neue Klasse design and engineering direction, the next X7 appears to follow its own path. In that sense, it has more in common with the latest 7 Series update, which evolved the existing formula instead of reinventing it from scratch.
That may actually suit the X7 perfectly. Buyers in the full-size luxury SUV class are not always looking for radical change. They want road presence, comfort, technology, and enough visual freshness to signal that they are driving the latest thing. On that front, this imagined 2028 BMW X7 looks like it understands the assignment.
And yes, there is a strong chance the production model will stay quite close to these renderings. BMW is expected to reveal the next-generation X7 in 2027, before launching it as a 2028 model in key markets. When it arrives, it should continue battling heavyweights such as the Mercedes-Benz GLS, Cadillac Escalade, and the long-rumored Audi Q9.
There is another twist, though. The X7 may not remain BMW’s ultimate SUV for very long. Reports continue to point to growing interest within BMW’s dealer network for something even larger, a true range-topper likely to wear the X9 badge. If that project gets the green light on schedule, BMW could soon have an even more direct answer to oversized luxury SUVs like the Escalade.
So where does that leave the new X7? In a surprisingly strong position. It may soon have a bigger sibling above it, but that does not make it any less important. If anything, it gives the X7 room to become the more polished, more balanced flagship for buyers who want full-size luxury without stepping into something truly massive.
Based on these renderings, BMW seems to be aiming for evolution done properly. Not flashy for the sake of it. Not timid either. Just a large luxury SUV with a stronger sense of proportion and a face that looks far more resolved than many expected.

is this even true? renderings look plausible but BMW tweaks details last minute, so if that grille stays... i'm kinda skeptical, feels tuned for buyers

wow, BMW playing it safe but slick - looks planted, not overdone. hidden handles are classy, but is it enough vs the Escalade? curious
