Apple has quietly slashed the price of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max — but only for shoppers in China. The move, announced as a limited-time discount, marks the company’s first official price cut for the new flagship models.
What changed and why it matters
The discount is 300 yuan (roughly $42), bringing the iPhone 17 Pro to 8,699 yuan (about $1,230) and the iPhone 17 Pro Max to 9,699 yuan (about $1,370). Apple introduced the 17 series around three months ago with a new A19 Pro chip, a redesigned camera module, a unified aluminum frame, and enhanced cooling that includes a vapor chamber and larger internal structure.
Both Pro models share a 6-core CPU and GPU in the A19 Pro, a tougher ceramic shield back, and a triple 48-megapixel camera system with up to 8x optical zoom and 40x digital zoom. Despite these premium upgrades, Apple’s decision to reduce prices — even temporarily and in a single market — is noteworthy. Why China? The country remains a critical battleground for smartphone sales, and the price tweak looks aimed at sustaining momentum amid fierce competition.

So far the iPhone 17 family has outperformed expectations in China: early sales figures for the first 11 weeks show meaningful growth versus last year. For buyers, the discount makes the Pro models slightly more accessible; for rivals and resellers, it signals Apple’s willingness to nudge pricing locally to protect market share.
Will the reduction expand to other markets? Apple hasn’t said. For now, shoppers in China get the only official break on Apple’s latest flagships — a limited window to nab the Pro hardware at a slightly lower price.
