GameMT EX5: Retro PS Vita-style Android Handheld Debuts

GameMT has teased the EX5, a budget Android handheld that borrows the PlayStation Vita's silhouette while adding a few unexpected touches. The teaser, shared on the Roybeila YouTube channel, highlights a 5-inch 1080p screen, MediaTek internals and a quirky hardware dial that swaps performance profiles on the fly.

Under the hood the EX5 runs on a 12nm MediaTek Helio G81, pairing two Cortex-A75 and six Cortex-A55 cores with a Mali-G52 MP2 GPU. GameMT matches the chipset with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage, plus a microSD slot for expansion. Connectivity comes via dual-band Wi-Fi 5, and the 5-inch IPS display pushes a 1920x1080 resolution — a relatively high pixel count for an entry-level handheld.

A PS Vita look with a twist: the performance dial

The control layout will feel familiar: a D-pad, face buttons, shoulder triggers and a single thumbstick on the left. Instead of a second right thumbstick, GameMT added a mechanical-style switch that toggles between three performance profiles — Performance, Balanced and 'Pwrsave-Auto'. It’s a small hardware flourish that aims to give users instant control over thermals and battery life without diving into software menus.

Software-wise the EX5 runs Android and, according to the teaser, supports cloud gaming, native Android titles and popular emulation frontends such as ES-DE and Pegasus. That makes it useful both as a portable storefront device and a retro-emulation platform for older consoles.

GameMT hasn't shared pricing or a firm release date yet, only that the EX5 is "coming soon." For enthusiasts watching the handheld space, it’s another affordable option that emphasizes retro aesthetics and flexible performance modes.

In related news, Ayaneo recently launched the Pocket DMG Silver Limited Edition powered by the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2, and also revealed the Pocket Vert with a 3.5-inch LTPS LCD, a dual-mode hidden touchpad and a 6000mAh battery — a reminder that competition in compact gaming hardware is heating up.
