The recent spike in memory costs is starting to ripple beyond phones and PCs and into the handheld gaming market. AYN has confirmed a shipping delay for its premium Odin 3 Ultra after a sharp rise in RAM prices and a short-term memory supply crunch.
What AYN told customers and the choices available
AYN pushed Odin 3 Ultra deliveries — the 24GB RAM, 1TB storage model — back to mid-January 2026. To ease the disruption, the company is giving preorder customers two paths: wait for the Ultra on the revised schedule, or switch to the Odin 3 Max (16GB RAM, 512GB storage) and receive a refund for the price difference. The Ultra currently lists at $519, while the Max is $449.
For most users the tradeoff is about multitasking headroom and storage rather than raw frame rates or chipset power. Both models share the same core hardware: Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite CPU, active cooling, a 6-inch 120Hz OLED, an 8,000mAh battery, microSD expansion, a 3.5mm jack, and external display support.
If you rely on heavy background apps or keep many large games locally, the Ultra's larger memory and storage will matter. If you primarily play single titles or stream and use cloud saves, the Max remains a very capable alternative.
Why this matters beyond AYN
The delay is a reminder that component pricing can quickly reshape hardware decisions, even in niche segments. Elevated RAM costs could push manufacturers to rethink default configurations, nudge buyers toward smaller capacity tiers, or delay launches until prices stabilize. The smartphone industry is facing similar pressure: tighter memory budgets might affect entry-level phones with feature-heavy skins and even premium devices expected to run more on-device AI workloads.
