Apple has quietly raised the stakes on its foldable play. New sourcing instructions suggest the company asked suppliers to build roughly 10 million units of the rumored iPhone Ultra for 2026. Ten million.

The figure comes via Nikkei Asia, which cites people familiar with Apple’s supply plans. Earlier whispers put the initial run closer to 7 or 8 million, so this escalation looks deliberate, not accidental.

Why ten million changes the equation

On paper, 10 million isn’t astronomical. For Apple, though, it signals confidence that a premium foldable can find a meaningful audience. It also creates pressure across the supply chain: display yield, hinge reliability, and assembly lines must all scale without sinking margins.

The report adds more context. Apple reportedly asked suppliers for an extra 70 million units of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, pushing the company’s 2026 target for the new iPhone family to around 220 million units. Some partners were even told to stand ready for as many as 85 million additional orders in the second half of the year, and to reserve select iPhone 17 components for the iPhone 18 rollout.

That level of planning is not just about sales forecasts. It’s about risk management. Apple wants to avoid shortages that could crush momentum at launch. It also wants the flexibility to ramp faster if demand surprises on the upside.

Expectations now point to a September 8 announcement for the iPhone Ultra alongside the iPhone 18 Pro duo. Early pricing chatter put the foldable at roughly €2,300 to €2,800 depending on configuration.

So what does this mean for the market? For rivals, higher Apple volumes raise the bar. For suppliers, it means a busy year and higher stakes on quality control. For buyers, it could mean a faster path from hype to availability—or it could mean early allocation favors certain regions.

Apple has a habit of being measured. This move reads as measured too: ambitious but hedged. Watch for yield reports and preorder windows after the September reveal. That will tell us whether 10 million was conservative forecasting or the opening salvo of something much bigger.

If these production orders hold, Apple isn’t testing the foldable market—it's committing to it.
