Audi Delays A4 e-tron to March 2029 Over Tech Hurdles

Audi has delayed the A4 e-tron until at least March 2029 amid SSP platform setbacks and a late-stage switch to a 48-volt electrical architecture, giving BMW and Mercedes a multi-year advantage.

Audi has pushed the launch of the A4 e-tron to at least March 2029, a delay the company and German media tie to major technical and software challenges within Volkswagen Group’s next-generation platform programs. The postponement hands BMW and Mercedes-Benz several years of clear runway in the premium electric sedan segment.

Reports say the A4 e-tron was intended to sit on the Volkswagen Group’s Scalable Systems Platform, or SSP, which is meant to succeed both the MEB and PPE architectures across VW Group brands. Development of SSP has been slowed by technical difficulties and aggressive cost-cutting; Volkswagen has cut the planned SSP lineup from eight variants to four to increase parts commonality across brands.

Technical reshuffle and late-stage 48-volt switch

A further complication came when Audi chief executive Gernot Dollner ordered a late-stage engineering change to build a 48-volt electrical architecture into the vehicle rather than retain the conventional 12-volt network. That change required suppliers to retool and redesign parts late in development. Volkswagen’s new SDV 1.0 software, developed in a multi-billion-dollar partnership with Rivian, was originally written for 12-volt architectures; adapting that codebase to a 48-volt vehicle network adds additional software and integration work.

Handelsblatt reports the combined effect of the 48-volt integration and SSP’s broader development challenges has pushed the program roughly three years behind schedule. Audi had planned mid-2028 production but now expects the earliest volume deliveries in 2029.

Audi now expects the A4 e-tron no earlier than March 2029.

The timing gap also has immediate market consequences. Mercedes already has its electric C-Class on sale, and BMW has begun customer deliveries of its Neue Klasse i3, leaving Audi without a fresh A4-sized offering: the internal-combustion A4 was phased out in 2024, so the brand faces roughly five years without a model in the segment.

Details about the A4 e-tron remain limited. Audi is expected to carry design cues from the Concept C show car and to introduce its Radical Next design language on a mainstream volume model. Final specifications have not been confirmed by Audi, but the model is anticipated in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive forms. Published expectations put base variants near 400 horsepower with 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 kph) times under 6.0 seconds, while a range-topping S4 e-tron is estimated at about 510 horsepower and roughly 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds.

The A4 e-tron is reported to use an 800-volt electrical architecture, which sitting on that architecture will allow standard ultra-fast DC charging speeds of 270 kW to 300 kWh; battery capacity has not been confirmed. With production now moved into 2029, Audi’s official unveiling timetable has not been set publicly and remains some way off.
