CoinEx to wind down operations after nearly nine years

Cryptocurrency exchange CoinEx announced a phased shutdown after roughly nine years of service, citing a long-term decline in trading volume and market liquidity, rising regulatory costs, and increasingly complex security and compliance requirements. The staged exit, confirmed in reports on September 15, will gradually halt trading services while preserving withdrawal access for users.

Phased suspension timeline and affected services

Initial restrictions

In the first phase the exchange will stop new user registrations, suspend referral commissions and certain promotional rewards. Futures contracts will be placed in "Reduce-Only" mode, allowing traders only to reduce or close existing positions — not to open new ones.

Service shutdown dates

From September 22, CoinEx will terminate most non-spot services, including on-chain deposits (except for the CET token), margin trading, lending, Earn products and staking. Spot trading will continue for a short period and is scheduled to end on September 29.

Withdrawal window and asset handling

CoinEx says withdrawals will remain available through December 22, 2026, giving users more than three years to reclaim assets. After that date, the exchange will cease operations completely and any unwithdrawn USDT balances will be handed over to an independent custodian, which will charge a monthly custody fee. CoinEx also plans to repurchase its native CET token at the initial offering price of 0.005 USDT.

Wallet services to stay active

Unlike the trading platform, CoinEx Wallet and CoinEx Vault will continue operating independently of the exchange. Support pages for the wallet remain active, and users can still access self-custodial services during and after the exchange’s shutdown.

Implications for the crypto market

The closure of CoinEx — alongside other mid-tier exchange exits — highlights ongoing pressure on crypto platforms from shrinking liquidity and elevated regulatory overhead. Traders and investors should prioritize withdrawing assets within the announced deadline and consider custody and liquidity risks when choosing exchanges moving forward.
