Owners of Apple's newly released iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max running iOS 27 are reporting an unusual speaker crackling issue that persists after Apple pushed iOS 27.0.1.
Scope and reported symptoms
Apple issued iOS 27.0.1 to address a bug that caused phones to restart when Face ID authentication failed. Multiple users now report a separate audio problem: an unusual crackling or popping sound coming from the speakers. Descriptions include a crackle, a faint tick, a pop, or random clicking. Reports indicate the behaviour is primarily coming from the earpiece speaker rather than the bottom speaker. Both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are said to be affected.
When the noise appears
User accounts vary on frequency and triggers. Some owners say the noise is constant on affected units; others hear it only in specific situations.

- During app use
- When scrolling websites
- On receipt of notifications
- When the keyboard appears
- During calls on the cellular network
- Toggling Airplane mode on and off allegedly triggers the sound
- Quickly adjusting screen brightness allegedly triggers the sound
Replacements and next steps
Some customers who returned a brand-new iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max report receiving replacement units exhibiting the same behaviour. It is currently unclear whether the root cause is software or hardware. If the issue is software, a further iOS update would be the expected remedy; if it is hardware, a wider repair or recall might be required. Apple has not publicly acknowledged the problem.
