SpaceX shares climbed nearly 8 percent on Monday to $171.09, a rise that Forbes says lifted Elon Musk's estimated net worth to $1.046 trillion and returned him to trillionaire status.

Forbes records show Musk's wealth has crossed the one trillion dollar mark several times in recent months. The outlet notes that after SpaceX's initial public offering in June, Musk for the first time achieved a 13-digit net worth, but a subsequent fall in the company's share price pushed his estimated wealth below one trillion dollars.

Shares of SpaceX have trended upward since early August, and the near 8 percent gain on Monday was the most recent move to push his holdings back above the trillion dollar threshold, according to Forbes's estimates.

Market peaks and asset concentration

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index previously put Musk's peak net worth at $1.32 trillion on June 16. A large portion of his wealth is tied to his stakes in SpaceX and Tesla, so fluctuations in those companies' share prices directly affect his estimated net worth.

Forbes lists Jeff Bezos and Larry Page as the second- and third-richest people in the world, with estimated net worths of $371 billion and $284 billion respectively.
