Samsung is set to expand the portable storage market with the Portable SSD P9, a USB4 external drive that combines blistering transfer speeds with desktop-class capacity. The P9 promises high throughput, large storage options, and engineering focused on sustained performance — all traits aimed at creators, pros and gamers on the move.

Capacity and speed that change expectations

The headline spec is simple but significant: an 8TB option paired with a USB4 40Gbps interface and peak transfer rates up to 4000MB/s. That positions the P9 among the fastest portable SSDs available and makes it the first external 8TB drive to support USB4. For context, Samsung says an 8TB P9 can hold more than two million photos or roughly 3,720 HD movies, turning a pocket drive into a serious working archive.

Real-world use: editing, gaming and large archives

Those numbers translate into practical advantages. Content creators can work with realtime editing of up to 12K video streams, while gamers and professionals benefit from faster level loads, quicker backups and the ability to carry large project libraries between machines. The USB4 connection also broadens compatibility for high-bandwidth workflows on laptops, docks and production gear.

Thermal control and efficiency

Samsung developed new thermal management to keep the P9 performing under sustained loads. The company reports major gains in power efficiency compared with the previous generation — improving read efficiency by roughly 333% and write efficiency by about 405%. Those efficiency gains reduce throttling and help preserve battery life on connected devices during heavy transfers.

Compatibility extends across Windows and macOS, Android phones and tablets, game consoles and professional production equipment, making the P9 a flexible companion whether you’re editing, archiving or gaming.

The Portable SSD P9 has already been recognized with a CES 2026 Innovation Award. Samsung hasn’t confirmed pricing or an exact ship date yet; the P9 is expected to be formally unveiled at CES, which begins January 6, 2026.

In other pre-CES news, Samsung also previewed a 130-inch Micro RGB TV with an extremely wide color gamut and announced what it calls the world’s brightest QD-OLED TV — signaling a busy season for the company across storage and display innovations.
