New leaks point to a brighter screen for Apple’s next iPhone. Sources say the iPhone 18 could push OLED brightness beyond the iPhone 17’s already impressive numbers, but that ambition may be creating supply challenges.
Brighter screen, tougher requirements
The tip comes from Instant Digital on Weibo, which reports that BOE — one of Apple’s display partners — might not be able to supply OLED panels for the iPhone 18 because Apple’s brightness targets are unusually demanding. If accurate, this suggests the iPhone 18 will aim for higher typical and peak brightness than the iPhone 17, which currently offers about 1,000 nits typical, 1,600 nits in HDR, and a peak of roughly 3,000 nits.
Higher brightness improves outdoor visibility and makes HDR content pop, but it also raises engineering hurdles. Manufacturers need to balance brightness with power consumption, heat management, and long-term panel durability — factors that can complicate mass production and limit which suppliers can meet Apple’s specs.
Recent rumors also peg the iPhone 18 with a 6.27-inch LTPO OLED panel, a 120Hz refresh rate, and the continued presence of the Dynamic Island. Another notable rumor: Apple might move the iPhone 18 from its traditional September unveiling to an early 2027 announcement, launching alongside a cheaper iPhone 18e variant.
Whether this leak signals a major leap in smartphone displays or just iterative improvement, it underlines how display performance remains a competitive battleground. If Apple truly pushes brightness further, expect tighter supplier selection and a spotlight on which manufacturers can hit those specs at scale.
