Samsung appears poised to push Galaxy visuals further with One UI 9, borrowing a translucent, glass-like aesthetic from Android 17 while adding practical tweaks like smarter screen recording and a possible native app lock.
A layered, translucent makeover — but not Apple's
After the big redesign in One UI 7.0 and the incremental styling in 8.5, One UI 9 looks set to lean into soft, frosted-glass effects across core system surfaces. Leaks tied to Android 17 point to background blur and translucency in areas such as the Quick Panel, notifications, the power menu and both compact and expanded volume sliders. The wallpaper subtly shows through, creating a layered, premium look without copying Apple's iOS "Liquid Glass". Think refined translucency rather than a literal imitation.

These glassy elements will also play nicely with Android’s Dynamic Color system — Samsung’s Color Palette will be able to tint blurred panels to match your wallpaper, keeping the interface cohesive and personal.
Practical upgrades: screen recording and app lock
Beyond visuals, Android 17 reportedly brings meaningful quality-of-life improvements that Samsung could fold into One UI 9. Expect richer screen recording tools that let you draw over recordings, show touch indicators and pick whether audio comes from the device, the microphone, or both. A visible elapsed-time pill in the status bar makes it obvious when you’re recording, and finished clips can be edited, deleted or shared right away.

Another handy addition is a lightweight app lock feature Google is exploring. If it lands in Android 17 and Samsung adopts it, Galaxy users would finally get a built-in way to secure individual apps without third-party tools — a popular request for years.

Google is due to release Android 17 Developer Beta 1 in Q1, with a stable release expected around mid-2026. If the timelines hold and Samsung incorporates these changes, One UI 9 could start arriving on Galaxy phones and tablets later in that cycle.
Small visual shifts, useful recording tools and a potential app lock make this update feel like one that balances style with substance — a welcome direction for people who want their phones to look modern and work smarter at the same time.
