XPeng launches GX — its biggest, most premium SUV yet

XPeng, the Chinese maker known for electric and hybrid vehicles, has revealed the GX: a six-seat, long-range hybrid SUV positioned as the brand’s largest and most luxurious model to date. Designed to take on established full-size rivals, the GX is expected to appear in export markets under a different name—likely to avoid a trademark clash with Lexus’s GX—adding to speculation that this could be the long-rumored G9L.

Design and size: Range Rover cues, full-size presence

Limited official images show a chunky, upscale silhouette that’s larger than XPeng’s electric G9 and carries styling hints reminiscent of Range Rover models. Chinese media estimate the GX measures around 5.2 metres in length, putting it squarely in the same class as the Nissan Patrol and BMW X7. With six seats and a deliberately premium stance, the GX will square off against the new generation of large Chinese SUVs—like the ZEEKR 9X and Lynk & Co 900—aiming to win buyers who want space, status and green credentials.

Powertrain and performance

Under the skin the GX uses XPeng’s hybrid approach: a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine that acts as a generator, a 63.3 kWh battery pack, and a rear electric motor rated at 210 kW (about 281 hp) with 465 Nm of torque. XPeng says the internal-combustion generator produces roughly 3.2 kWh of electricity per litre of fuel, meaning a 60-litre tank could fully recharge the battery around three times.

Key figures to note:

  • Electric range: ~452 km (WLTP-equivalent claim)
  • Combined range with full tank: ~1,602 km
  • Rear motor output: 210 kW / 281 hp and 465 Nm
  • Battery capacity: 63.3 kWh

The GX rides on XPeng’s new SEPA 3.0 Physical AI architecture, a platform the company promotes as smarter and better integrated for large electrified vehicles.

Global ambitions and market timing

Jason Clark, CEO of TrueEV—the current XPeng distributor in Australia—has confirmed that a bigger, upgraded vehicle called the G9L is coming. That endorsement strengthens the idea that the export version of the GX could be rebadged as G9L in markets such as Australia. Clark also hinted that some hybrid technologies may roll out across a broader XPeng line-up late in 2026 rather than being exclusive to the initial launch.

Pre-orders for the G9L are expected to open in Q3 2026, with deliveries scheduled for Q4 2026.

"The XPeng GX signals how Chinese brands are pushing into the high-end SUV market—combining long electric range with traditional combustion backup for real-world confidence," says one industry analyst.

Whether marketed as GX or G9L, XPeng’s new flagship aims to blend electric-driving capability, long-range flexibility and premium appointments to challenge established full-size luxury SUVs globally.
