Walk into Liberty City after dusk and for a moment the streets look like someone raised the resolution of reality. That’s the first thing you notice about DarkoRTX’s latest work: light that actually behaves like light, and surfaces that finally talk back to it.

The longtime modder behind the RTX Remix Path Tracing project has pushed an update for GTA IV that isn’t just polish; it’s a visual rethink. New, sharper textures and revamped lighting transform selected blocks of Liberty City, giving familiar alleys and storefronts a depth the original engine never intended.

The current package ships with both 2K and 4K texture options aimed at players with beefy rigs. Expect richer detail on facades and sidewalks, and more convincing reflections where the game previously offered only flat color. New material maps—metallic, normal and roughness maps—add micro-variations to surfaces, so puddles, grates and chipped paint catch light in ways that feel tactile.

Don’t get ahead of yourself: this isn’t a wholesale remaster. For now the overhaul is limited to buildings, sidewalks and the streets around the South Bohan Apartment area. Still, the transformation there is enough to hint at what a full pass could mean for the whole city.

This update pushes GTA IV’s visuals several generations forward, at least within the areas it touches.

Performance is the usual trade-off. Path tracing and high-res textures demand modern GPUs and plenty of VRAM. If your setup leans older, the project offers a lighter, free version so you can sample the changes without crippling frame drops.

Where to get it? The stripped-down, free variant is available on Nexus Mods for anyone who wants to try it. The complete RTX Remix package, with all assets and the full implementation, is distributed to supporters on Patreon.

It’s a fan-made labor of love—unfinished, ambitious, and very much alive. If you’ve been waiting to see GTA IV take on a glossy new coat of realism, this one is worth downloading and watching as it evolves.
