Pay to watch stories in stealth mode? That’s where Instagram might be headed next.
Meta is quietly testing a new subscription tier called Instagram Plus, and it’s already surfacing in places like Japan, Mexico, and the Philippines. The idea is simple: add a layer of paid perks on top of the familiar, free experience. The reality feels more like a subtle shift in how social media is packaged and sold.
At the center of this experiment are Stories, the disappearing posts that have become Instagram’s daily heartbeat. Instagram Plus leans heavily into that format, offering tools designed to tweak visibility, control, and insight. Subscribers can view stories anonymously, track how many times a post has been rewatched, and even extend a story’s lifespan beyond the usual 24-hour window.
There’s also a visibility boost baked in. One “spotlight” per week lets users push a story further into their audience’s feeds, paired with a Superlike feature aimed at making interactions feel more expressive—if not a bit performative.

Small perks, bigger questions
Some additions are more practical than flashy. Instagram Plus expands audience controls, letting users build unlimited custom lists for who can view their stories—an evolution of the Close Friends feature. It also introduces searchable viewer lists, a small but meaningful upgrade for anyone tracking engagement closely.
None of this exists in a vacuum. Snapchat+ and X Premium have already normalized paying for social media extras, with Snapchat reportedly pulling in tens of millions of subscribers. Meta is clearly testing how far users are willing to go—not just in time spent, but in money.
Pricing, at least for now, seems intentionally low. Early reports suggest around $1 in the Philippines and just over $2 in Japan and Mexico. Cheap enough to tempt curiosity. Low enough to scale quickly if the model sticks.
It’s also separate from Meta Verified, the company’s identity and security-focused subscription. Instagram Plus is less about credibility and more about control who sees what, when, and how.
Still, there’s a broader tension here. Social platforms are already dense with ads, influencer campaigns, and algorithm-driven content. Adding paid layers on top risks turning everyday interactions into tiered experiences.
If Instagram Plus expands globally, the real test won’t be features—it’ll be whether users feel those features are worth paying for in a feed that’s already fighting for authenticity.
