Imagine Apple quietly nudging the memory dial up by one gigabyte. Not a headline-grabbing leap. But noticeable. That, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, is exactly what the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e might deliver when they arrive next spring: 9GB of RAM.
Yes, nine. The odd detail is not just the total but how Apple would reach it. Kuo says the phones will use six 1.5GB memory dies to reach 9GB, instead of the four 2GB dies inside the iPhone 17 family. Strange math, right? It adds up to slightly more memory, and that extra gig is aimed at smoothing Apple Intelligence tasks and background performance.
A peculiar memory mix
Why split memory into more smaller dies? There are a few sensible guesses. Smaller dies can improve manufacturing yield, and they let Apple balance cost and capacity while working with available suppliers. It might also be a thermal or power tradeoff. Or maybe Apple is just fine-tuning how memory interacts with its new A20 chip.
Kuo also lays out the rest of the lineup. The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the rumored iPhone Ultra are expected to jump to 12GB of RAM, built from eight 1.5GB dies. Standard models appear set to run on the A20. The Pro tier will use an A20 Pro variant, keeping the pattern Apple has followed for years: more memory and a tuned chipset for the higher-end phones.
None of this is official. Apple rarely confirms component-level changes ahead of launch. But these tweaks are meaningful. In everyday use, one extra gig of RAM won’t transform battery life or camera quality on its own. It does, however, buy more breathing room for background apps, larger on-device models for AI features, and a smoother multitasking experience for power users.
So what should you take away? If Kuo is right, Apple is making a modest but deliberate adjustment to memory architecture, not a dramatic shift. It feels like optimization rather than overhaul. Expect the iPhone 18 family to be evolutionary: smarter under the hood, not suddenly different to hold.
