Toyota launches the new Wildlander in China
Toyota has introduced the second-generation Wildlander for the Chinese market — a region-specific reinterpretation of the well-known RAV4. Built by the FAW–Toyota joint venture, the Wildlander keeps the mechanical bones of the RAV4 but reworks styling, interior tech and equipment to suit urban Chinese buyers looking for a refined, city-focused compact crossover.
Design and dimensions: familiar yet different
Visually the Wildlander leans toward a cleaner, more urban look compared with the off-road-flavored RAV4 sold in China. Up front the Wildlander sports the standard RAV4 silhouette with a frameless honeycomb grille and streamlined bumpers that emphasize everyday elegance over ruggedness.

Key dimensions:
- Length: 4,600 mm (20 mm shorter than the RAV4)
- Width: 1,855 mm (same as RAV4)
- Height: 1,680 mm (same as RAV4)
- Wheelbase: 2,690 mm (identical)
- Wheels: 18- or 20-inch options
These near-identical dimensions mean similar cabin space and driving dynamics, while exterior tweaks help the Wildlander stand apart on urban streets and gated communities.
Interior and infotainment upgrades
The biggest divergence from the RAV4 is inside. Wildlander buyers get a significantly larger infotainment display: the base model features a 14-inch screen, with higher trims offering up to 15.6 inches. By comparison, the RAV4 in China uses a 10.25-inch screen at entry level and up to 12.9 inches on top trims. This focus on a larger, more immersive cabin display underlines Toyota’s attention to in-car tech as a selling point in this segment.

Powertrain lineup and performance
Unlike many global markets where the RAV4 is predominantly hybrid-only, the Wildlander in China continues to be offered with internal-combustion engines alongside hybrid variants — giving buyers more choice.
Available powertrains:
- 2.0L naturally aspirated inline-four (171 hp) with CVT; offered with front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive.
- Entry hybrid: 2.0L engine plus electric motor, combined output 196 hp; front-wheel drive only.
- Stronger hybrid: 2.5L engine with two electric motors, combined output 237 hp; comes standard with all-wheel drive.
The CVT-equipped petrol model aims at smooth urban driving and fuel efficiency, while the hybrid options deliver the stronger total output and lower consumption that many buyers now expect from compact crossovers.
Market positioning and price
Priced from ¥169,800 to ¥230,800, the Wildlander is positioned as a tech-forward, city-oriented alternative to the off-road-styled RAV4. It targets buyers who prioritize cabin comfort, infotainment and efficient hybrid driving over rugged capability.

Highlights:
- Local production through FAW–Toyota
- Larger infotainment screens for better connectivity
- Multiple powertrain choices including 2.0L and 2.5L hybrids
"The Wildlander is Toyota’s answer to Chinese buyers who want RAV4 practicality with more urban refinement," said one market analyst.
For shoppers comparing compact crossovers, the Wildlander offers a balanced package of technology, efficiency and everyday usability — a tailored RAV4 for China’s city drivers.

Is this even a RAV4 or just badge engineering? Bigger screens are nice but is that enough to win Chinese buyers? Price seems a bit steep, no?
