On 5 October 2026 U.S. District Judge James Selna ordered Apple to pay an additional $184 million in interest in a patent infringement suit by Masimo, raising the award to $818 million.
A jury in November of last year found Apple infringed Masimo patents related to heart-rate monitoring in the Apple Watch and awarded Masimo $634 million in damages.
Judge Selna rejected Apple’s argument that adding interest would constitute a windfall for Masimo, citing US Supreme Court guidance that "interest from the time that the royalty payments would have been received merely serves to make the patent owner whole".

The judge declined Masimo’s request for a 7 percent interest rate, which Masimo said would have produced $243 million in interest. Instead the court used Masimo’s own borrowing rate, compounded annually from when the infringement began.
The $634 million damages plus the $184 million in court-ordered interest total $818 million.
The order resolves the post-verdict interest calculation; the jury’s damages award of $634 million remains intact.
