BYD Reveals Larger Seal 07, Undercuts Tesla Model 3

BYD has unveiled the second-generation Seal 07, a larger, more tech-heavy compact electric sedan offered in both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid forms. The redesigned model introduces a roof-mounted LiDAR, expanded interior space and a claimed long-range electric version, and debuts at a lower entry price than the Tesla Model 3 in China.

Design and packaging

BYD says the new Seal 07 adopts the Ocean Aesthetics 2.0 design language, aligning it visually with the Seal 08. Notable exterior features include wave-shaped split headlights flanking a closed front grille, a panoramic sunroof and semi-hidden door handles. The model rides on aerodynamic wheels offered in 18- or 19-inch sizes, and a roof-mounted LiDAR is part of the specification list.

BYD notes the Seal 07 has grown in every direction compared with the outgoing model and is larger than its main rival in China and Europe, the Tesla Model 3.

Powertrains and range

The Seal 07 will be offered as a battery-electric vehicle and as a plug-in hybrid. The electric variant uses a rear-mounted motor available in two outputs: 329 horsepower (333 metric horsepower) for the base unit and 402 horsepower (408 metric horsepower) for the higher-output version. BYD has not confirmed the final pack capacity publicly but the electric Seal 07 is expected to use an 80-kWh Blade battery, which BYD says should enable up to 446 miles (718 kilometers) of driving range.

The plug-in hybrid pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for a combined output of 369 horsepower (375 metric horsepower). The PHEV uses a 38-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and BYD states it can drive up to 152 miles (245 kilometers) on electric power alone.

Pricing and market positioning

BYD has announced a starting price for the electric Seal 07 of RMB 169,900. For comparison, the Tesla Model 3 is priced at RMB 235,500 in China. The Seal 07 will be produced in China and is offered to customers in both EV and PHEV configurations.
