Galaxy S27 Ultra to Keep 50MP 5x Sony Telephoto Camera

The Galaxy S27 Ultra will use a 50MP 5x optical-zoom telephoto camera with a Sony sensor, according to Roland Quandt, a source with a generally strong track record on Samsung leaks.

Quandt's report closes a recent debate: an earlier rumor had claimed Samsung planned a new 4x telephoto module based on a 1/1.9-inch type sensor, while an intervening source denied any change and said the S27 Ultra would retain the 5x telephoto from its predecessor. Quandt's detail strongly implies the S27 Ultra will carry the same 5x telephoto setup seen on the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

The confirmed telephoto spec is accompanied by a 50MP ultrawide camera and a 16MP selfie camera with autofocus, the latter an increase from the S26 Ultra's 12MP front-facing unit.

Other cameras and hardware

According to the same update, the S27 Ultra's ultrawide sensor will match the S26 Ultra at 50MP. The front camera upgrade to 16MP adds autofocus where the prior model used a 12MP selfie module without it. The report does not provide further sensor model numbers or optical designs beyond the telephoto and ultrawide resolutions.

On display and platform, the S27 Ultra is expected to use Samsung's recently announced M16 OLED panel. For processing, sources indicate at least some markets will receive Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, while other regions may see Samsung's Exynos 2700 offered, according to earlier rumors.

Earlier conflicting reports about a 4x telephoto sensor and a 1/1.9-inch sensor type are effectively contradicted by Quandt's confirmation of a 5x Sony telephoto. No launch date or complete official specification sheet has been published by Samsung at this time.
