Google has posted an official notice that it will retire Gemini Gems and migrate users' custom tools to Skills. A banner in the Gemini tools manager states support for Gems will end on November 17 (26 Aban), and the company says migration to Skills will begin that day.

The notice cautions that the transfer may take several days beyond the announced date. When the process is complete, Google says existing instructions and customizations will be redefined as Skills so users' configurations are preserved.
Access and uncertainty
The change exposes a practical gap in access levels. Creating Gems has been available to everyone, including free accounts. Skills are currently limited to paid subscribers of Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra who have access to the Gemini Spark model.
It is not yet clear whether Google will open Skills to free accounts when Gems are turned off. Google has not said whether it will extend Skills access to free accounts or provided a timetable for that decision.
