Honda Reveals Prototype as It Enters e-MTB Market in 2027

Honda will enter the electric mountain bike market in 2027 and showed an unnamed e-MTB prototype at Sea Otter Europe in Girona.

The company released no technical specifications, powertrain details, range, weight, or pricing for the prototype.

Honda said the project involves Toni Bou, a 40-time FIM Trial World Champion who rides for the company.

Honda described the planned model as a high-end product that will use electric assistance to combine motorcycle-style performance with mountain-biking, but the company provided no further definition.

The display included Honda's RN01 downhill racer from the early 2000s. The RN01 was built for Team G Cross Honda, used an internal gearbox to allow gear changes without pedalling, and competed in NORBA and Mountain Bike World Cup events until the team disbanded in 2007.

Honda also showed the CR Electric Proto motocrosser, which entered the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup two years ago and has since appeared as a wildcard in Japan Motorcross Championship rounds, and the RTL Electric Trial bike.

Honda said the RTL was conceived to exceed the performance of the Montesa Cota 4RT Factory and presently ranks fourth in the FIM World Trial Championship.

The company exhibited the EM1 e: electric moped, the CUV e: electric scooter, and the WN7 full-size electric motorcycle at Sea Otter Europe.

Honda did not provide a model name, detailed specifications, production dates, or pricing; the firm says it will reveal more information closer to the 2027 launch.

This was Honda's first appearance at Sea Otter Europe.
