Jaguar’s new Type 01 arrives with a three-motor powertrain that produces a combined 1,016 horsepower and 1,365 newton metres of torque, a package the company says makes it the most powerful road-going Jaguar to date. Jaguar claims the Type 01 will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and balances weight 50:50 front to rear.

Introduced as a four-seat, four-door all-electric grand tourer, Jaguar positions the Type 01 as the brand’s first step into a redefined identity that aims to retain the company’s sporting DNA within a fully electric architecture.

Powertrain and performance

The Type 01 uses one motor on the front axle and two motors on the rear axle, running on an 850-volt electrical architecture and a 118 kWh battery pack. Jaguar quotes a WLTP range of about 724 kilometres and says sustained high-speed range on highways falls to roughly 515 kilometres. In Dynamic drive mode the system can send up to 87 percent of drive torque to the rear axle, and Jaguar describes firmer suspension and sharper steering and throttle response in that setting.

Jaguar provides the performance figures as manufacturer claims. The car’s active systems include front air intakes that open when additional cooling for motors or brakes is required and a three-stage active rear spoiler that, above 155 km/h, generates up to 74 kilograms of downforce. Deployment of the spoiler also lowers overall ride height by 15 millimetres to improve high-speed stability.

Chassis, aerodynamics and packaging

The Type 01 sits 5.24 metres long and only 1.4 metres tall. Jaguar says 17 percent of the car’s total length lies between the front axle and the doors. The manufacturer also reports the car’s centre of gravity is 6.1 centimetres lower than the driver’s seating reference point and that the yaw centre is positioned between the occupants to create a more embracing driving feel. Rear-wheel steering provides up to 6 degrees of angle at low speeds, yielding a turning circle of 11.5 metres for a car of this size.

Suspension hardware mixes double-wishbone geometry at the front with a multi-link rear layout and a dynamic air-spring system featuring variable-rate springs and two-valve active dampers. Jaguar also cites active aerodynamic measures tuned for both efficiency and cooling.

Exterior details echo Jaguar concept designs: flush door handles, narrow LED projector headlights Jaguar calls the world’s thinnest at 8.4 centimetres in height using 20,000 LEDs, rear lights concealed within a perforated rear bumper panel, and standard 23-inch wheels with 21-inch options. Jaguar notes aluminium trim and a laser-etched leaping-cat graphic on the front fender. All driver-assistance sensors are integrated behind the front Jaguar word badge.

Interior packaging is intentionally modern and uncluttered. A 24-inch OLED display sits behind the steering wheel and a vertical 7-inch touchscreen in the centre console handles audio and climate functions. The conventional interior rearview mirror is replaced by a ClearSight display mounted on the panoramic windshield base and aligned with the side mirrors. All four seats are heated and ventilated; front seats are 12-way adjustable and rear seats fold 50:50 to expand luggage capacity from 450 litres to 1,000 litres.

Jaguar has not published a final launch date. The company has not disclosed confirmed pricing, but the Type 01’s base price is expected to land in the range of $100,000 to $150,000, according to Jaguar’s guidance.

Wow, 1,016 hp? Jaguar going full mad scientist. 724 km WLTP sounds wild but real-world 515 at highway still sick. Price though... yikes.
