MetaMask debuts Money Account: a self-custodial stablecoin solution
MetaMask has introduced Money Account, a new self-custodial stablecoin product built on the Monad blockchain that combines automated yield, seamless spending, and integrated trading in a single balance. The offering lets users convert eligible stablecoins to MetaMask’s mUSD at 1:1 parity and begin earning a variable yield up to 4% APY after opting in—without lockups, minimum balances, or manual transfers.
One balance for savings, payments and trading
Money Account unifies features that previously required multiple DeFi platforms. Once users convert supported stablecoins—such as USDC, USDT, DAI and their aToken variants (aUSDC, aUSDT, aDAI)—to mUSD, funds earn yield automatically. The same mUSD balance can be used for on‑ramp purchases, trading through MetaMask’s swaps and derivatives interfaces, or everyday payments via the MetaMask Card where available.
How the mUSD yield works
Consensys says mUSD is collateralized one-to-one by U.S. dollars and short-term U.S. Treasury bills held in regulated custody by Bridge (a Stripe company). After users opt in, balances are allocated into third‑party smart contract vaults curated by Steakhouse Financial and managed by Veda. The launch routing places liquidity into Morpho, with plans to add Aave markets later. Reported returns update continuously in‑account and net out fees, with up to 4% variable APY advertised.
No staking, no conversion fees, immediate earning
Supported stablecoins can be converted instantly into mUSD at parity without conversion fees, according to MetaMask. Users can also purchase mUSD directly with debit and credit cards or Apple Pay. Because the product is self‑custodial, users retain control of their private keys, and MetaMask cannot freeze or transfer user funds.

Payments, cashback and gas sponsorship
Money Account integrates directly with the MetaMask Card for point‑of‑sale and online payments. Transactions settle from the mUSD balance without additional conversion steps, and eligible card spending can earn up to 3% cashback returned in mUSD. The product leverages Monad’s sponsored gas model to remove on‑chain transaction costs for end users, enabling near‑real‑time settlement and a low‑friction payment experience.
Why Monad matters
Built on Monad, Money Account benefits from sub‑second finality and predictable transaction costs, features Consensys highlights as essential for real‑time payments and instant account activity. Sponsored gas also simplifies the user experience by keeping network fees out of everyday flows, which is especially important for retail use of stablecoins and DeFi services.
Security, custody and governance
The architecture combines regulated custody for backing assets with on‑chain smart contract vaults for yield generation. Bridge (a Stripe company) holds the fiat and Treasury bill backing for mUSD, while the DeFi allocation is handled by Veda and curated by Steakhouse Financial. Users preserve private key custody, maintaining ultimate control and preventing MetaMask from unilaterally moving funds.
What this means for MetaMask’s roadmap
Money Account extends MetaMask’s role beyond a browser wallet and swap interface to a broader financial utility that mixes savings, payments and trading. The launch follows the platform’s recent Agent Wallet preview, an AI‑powered self‑custodial product that executes transactions under user-defined permissions. Together, these products signal MetaMask’s push into integrated, user-controlled crypto finance that aims to balance convenience with self‑custody principles.
Availability and limitations
Per Consensys, Money Account is available globally in eligible jurisdictions but excludes the UK and certain restricted regions. As with all DeFi and stablecoin products, users should evaluate counterparty, smart contract and regulatory risks before converting assets. The initial yield routing into Morpho and plans to add Aave markets indicate ongoing product evolution as liquidity strategies and partner integrations expand.
For crypto users seeking a single, self‑custodial balance for savings, spending, and trading—plus the convenience of sponsored gas and instant conversions—Money Account represents MetaMask’s latest step toward mainstreaming DeFi primitives for everyday use.

Pretty neat, one balance for pay savings and trading. Sponsored gas could be game changer. but UK excluded? regulatory mess, gotta watch this.
Hmm so MetaMask says mUSD is backed by Treasuries via Bridge, but who audits the routing to Morpho? sounds risky, need more transparency...
